Fitjar is a municipality in Fylke Vestland, Norway . It is located on the island of Stord , where it borders the municipality of Stord to the south . Beyond the surrounding fjords , the municipality of Austevoll lies in the north , Tysnes in the northeast and the municipality of Bømlo in the west . Islands in the Selbjørnsfjord also belong to the municipality . The administrative center of the municipality is also called Fitjar.

The municipality belongs to the Sunnhordland region .

A statue of King Håkon I the Good by the sculptor Anne Grimdalen commemorates the Battle of Fitjar (probably 961) . The statue was unveiled in 1961 by King Olav V during the celebration of the 1000th anniversary of the Battle of Fitjar.

Fitjar was its own Herad community in 1860 . Until 1898 the municipality name was Fitje . After 1964 the municipality bordered Stord to the south and southeast, Tysnes to the east and north, Austevoll to the northwest and Bømlo to the southwest and south. Before 1964, the southeast side of the islands of Selbjørn and Huftarøy also belonged to Fitjar.
