Bjørnafjorden is a municipality in Fylke Vestland, Norway . It was created on January 1, 2020 as part of the local government reform in Norway through the merger of the two municipalities Os and Fusa . The administrative center of the municipality is Osøyro , but parts of the administration are still located in the former center of the municipality of Fusa, Eikelandsosen .

geography

The municipality is located on Bjørnafjorden, which gives it its name, with its branches Lysefjorden , Samnangerfjorden , Eikelandsfjorden and Sævareidfjorden at the mouth of the Hardangerfjord . It borders in the north on Bergen and Samnanger , in the east on Kvam , in the south on Kvinnherad and Tysnes and in the west on Austevoll . The highest point is Tveitakvitingen at 1299 meters.

traffic

Bjørnafjorden is on the European route 39 , which connects the cities of Kristiansand , Stavanger , Bergen and Trondheim . There are ferry connections south from Halhjem to Sandvikvåg in Fitjar municipality (part of the E39) and to Våge in Tysnes municipality. The ferry from Hatvik to Venjaneset connects the two parts of Bjørnafjorden.

Name and coat of arms

In order to find a name for the new municipality, the residents of the two municipalities were asked to submit proposals. The most popular proposals Bjørnafjorden / Bjørnefjorden, Mid (t) hordland and Os & Fusa were submitted to Språkrådet , whose recommendations are widely recognized in Norway. In August 2017, the name Bjørnafjorden was finally chosen, also because this would allow the possibility of further incorporations, for example of Tysnes.

The municipal coat of arms was also determined in a competition and designed by a local goldsmith. An oselvar , a typical boat for the area, is depicted over two stylized waves that are also intended to be reminiscent of the glacier pots in Fusa or the rose painting in Os.
