Commune names
The name Kvinnherad can be divided into two parts. There are two possible explanations for the interpretation of Kvinn :
- Kvinn may have developed from tvinn , which may have a connection with the two rivers Hattebergselva and Melselva, which flow together in Rosendal. The municipal coat of arms symbolizes this.
- Kvinn can come from the norrön word kvinde or similar, which means something like " waterspout ". The phenomenon occurs relatively often on the Kvinnheradsfjord. Linguistic development laws speak against the theory in the starting point, but it cannot be completely rejected.
