Kinn is a municipality in Fylke Vestland, Norway . It was created on January 1, 2020 from the merger of the former municipalities of Flora and Vågsøy . The village of Bryggja with the surrounding farms joined the neighboring municipality of Stad .

geography

Kinn Kommune is located on the west coast of Norway and consists largely of islands. The larger, southern part of the municipality lies at the mouth of the Førdefjord in the Sunnfjord landscape . The northern part includes the island of Vågsøy and part of the adjacent mainland at the mouth of the Nordfjord in the Atlantic and is part of the historic Nordfjord landscape. In the north and northwest, Kinn borders on Stad, in the west on Gloppen and Sunnfjord and in the south on Askvoll . The municipality of Bremanger lies between the two parts of the municipality . The highest point in the municipality is the Ålfotbreen glacier on the border between Kinn, Bremanger and Gloppen, at an altitude of 1,385 meters.

The most populous place is the city of Florø with almost 9000 inhabitants. Also Måløy with about 3300 inhabitants, has city status. Other Tettsteder are Brandsøy, Eikefjord, Raudeberg, Holevik and Vågsvåg.

particularities

As the only municipality in mainland Norway, Kinn consists of two parts of the municipality, which are completely separated from each other by another municipality (Bremanger). There are around 100 kilometers and over two hours of travel time between the two administrative centers by land. This earned the municipality the nickname " Norges rarest commune " (Norway's strangest municipality). The unusual municipal division is a result of the Norwegian municipal reform that came into force on January 1, 2020. While Vågsøy and Flora were in favor of a merger, Bremanger voted against. Unlike in other similar cases, the Stortinget decided against compulsory unification and recognized the new commune.
