Bryggja is a village in the Norwegian municipality of Stad in Vestland Province .

location

It is located on the north bank of the Nordfjord . To the south of the location are the islands of Storøya , Kisteholmen and Flotøya . A little further to the east, the Kalvneset peninsula juts out into the fjord in a south-westerly direction, forming a larger bay near Maurstad .

Riksvei 15 runs through the village . At the eastern end of the village, Fylkesvei 61 joins Riksvei 15 from the northeast. Totland borders to the west and Bryggja to the east of Maurstad.

The population of the place has recently declined, falling from 348 inhabitants in 2000 to 339 (2006), 333 (2013) to 314 in 2019. Bryggja covers an area of ​​0.402 km² and lies at a height of 9 meters.

history

The name is derived from bryggje , which means jetty and refers to the long historical tradition of the place as a trading center in the Nordfjord. On January 1, 2020, Bryggja moved from the former municipality of Vågsøy to the newly formed municipality of Stad.

In the eastern part of the village there is a moat from the Iron Age as a ground monument . A little further to the east there is a monument dating from 1564 and a prehistoric tomb.

In Bryggja, agriculture is economically important, especially as livestock farming . In addition, there is also fishing, and there is also industrial production. The mineral olivine is processed by Sibelco Nordic AS .

Personalities

The engineer Dagfinn Hessevik (* 1935), the writer Rigmor Navekvien (* 1935) and the American cross-country skier Audun Endestad (* 1953) were born in Bryggja.
