Vågsøy was a municipality in the northwest of the Norwegian province Sogn og Fjordane (from 2020 Vestland province ), south of the Stadlandet peninsula . In the course of local government reform in Norway , Vågsøy was split up: the western part merged with Flora to form the Kinn municipality , the eastern part with Eid and Selje to form Stad .

The community center was Måløy (city status since 1997). Heradsheim town hall was built in 1915. 5970 inhabitants lived in an area of ​​176 km² (as of January 1, 2019). The municipality number was 1439.

history

The municipality was created in 1964 from the amalgamation of the predecessor municipalities Nord-Vågsøy and Sør-Vågsøy . In addition, the two islands Husevågøy, Gangsøy and Silda were incorporated from the two municipalities of Davik and Selje .

The municipality was north of the Nordfjord . In the municipality's area were the islands of Vågsøya , Silda , Husevågøy and Gangsøy . Neighboring communes were Selje in the north, Vanylven and Eid in the east and Bremanger in the south (across the fjord). Important places that belonged to the municipality were the administrative center Måløy and the other localities Raudeberg , Bryggja and Holevik .

economy

The main industries were fishing , fish farming and boat building . More than 1000 jobs were created by the fishing industry. In terms of the amount of fish landed (around 290,000 tonnes in 2004), the municipality was the largest fishing municipality in the province of Sogn og Fjordane. Mackerel and herrings were mainly caught.

The agricultural sector has declined sharply over the past 30 years. The farms in the area mainly raised animals, as no grain was grown. Most of the farmers worked on the side in a second job.

Måløy and the Måløybrua

The town of Måløy is located on Ulvesund , which separates the island from the mainland in the south of the Sildegap bay , and the town and island are connected to the mainland by the 1,224-meter-long Måløybrua (Måløy Bridge), which was opened to traffic in December 1973 .

The Hurtigruten ships call at Måløy on schedule. A speedboat runs to Selje in the north and to Florø and Bergen south . A motorboat from Måløy also runs several times a day to the island of Silda in Sildegap, which belongs to the municipality.
