The Selbjørnsfjord ( Norwegian : Selbjørnsfjorden ) is a fjord in the southwestern part of the Norwegian province of Vestland . It gets its name from the island of Selbjørn, which belongs to Austevoll municipality .
Surname
The name Selbjørn comes from the Old Norse Salbjǫrn ( German roughly saddle bear ), an early paraphrase of the word Hunt (German: booty). Since this was similar to the word hund (German: dog), which according to the superstition of seafarers was not allowed to be used on board a ship, the paraphrase began to be used.
location
The Selbjørnsfjord stretches from Slåtterøy fyr lighthouse on Slåtterøy in an easterly direction and ends after about 20 kilometers in Langenuren off the island of Tysnesøy . It forms the border between the island communities of Austevoll on its north side and Bømlo and Fitjar on its south side.
A 20-minute ferry connection links Husavik in Austevoll with Sandvikvåg on Fitjar at the innermost end of the fjord.
