In 1960 there were first plans to replace the previously existing ferry connection with a bridge. In 1974 Askøybrua AS was founded, the shares of which were held by several municipalities. In 1985 Bergen voted in favor of the planning, in 1986 Askøy and the road administration. The Norwegian Parliament in Storting approved the plans in 1987. The cost planning was based on costs of 696 million Norwegian kroner . Actual construction began in 1989 and was completed in 1992. The bridge was opened on December 12, 1992 and was initially subject to tolls . The toll collection was discontinued on November 18, 2006. The traffic figures increased significantly after the toll was lifted. Around 20,000 vehicles now cross the bridge every day. Traffic jams can occur during rush hour. Settlement and population increased significantly north of the bridge.

architecture

The largest span of the 1057 meter long steel bridge is 850 meters. The clearance height is specified as 63 meters, the height of the bridge masts as 152 meters. Until the Hardanger Bridge opened in 2013, the Askøy Bridge was Norway's longest suspension bridge.

The bridge was given a blue color in parts. The color, lighting and design of the bridge towers were carried out by the architecture firm Selberg Arkitekter AS.

The road leading over the bridge has one lane in each direction as well as one cycle and one footpath.
