Store Marstein and the Marstein lighthouse, summer 2008

Marstein fyr is a lighthouse in operation since 1877 on the small island of Store Marstein off the west coast of Norway . The island is on the south side of the entrance to the Krossfjord and belongs to the municipality of Austevoll in Fylke Vestland . The lighthouse marks the entrance to the Krossfjord and thus the southern entrance to Bergen and the northern entrance to the Hardangerfjord .

The lighthouse

The lighthouse, which has been fully automated since 2002 and no longer manned, is 17 m high. It is made of concrete and masonry, has a square floor plan and is crowned by a lantern and gallery . A low operating building is attached to the tower. The former guard house is a few meters away. The tower is painted white, the roof of the lantern is red.

The light signal, once a rotating white beam, today a white flash every 10 seconds at a fire height of 38 m above mean water, has a light intensity of 840,000 cd and is visible from a distance of 17.5 nautical miles . Below that, since 1979, a red light, interrupted twice, has appeared at a fire height of 29 m.

history

The first, octagonal lighthouse was built in 1877 and put into operation on October 1st of that year. In 1888 its light intensity was increased, and in 1915 the lighthouse was fitted with a fog horn , which remained in operation until 1993. In 1923 the first radio direction finder with a range of 50 nautical miles was successfully tested on the Marstein lighthouse. The lighthouse keeper lived on the island with his family.

During the Second World War , after the German occupation of Norway , the island was occupied by German troops who installed a battery of eight guns . This resulted in two Allied bombing raids on the island, on July 25 and August 1, 1940, which caused significant damage. The beacon was not operated during the war years.

In 1949/50 the entire system, which had suffered badly during the war years from bombing and years of neglect, was completely renewed. The old tower was replaced by the current one. A new guard house was built and the entire facility was surrounded by a protective breakwater wall made of concrete. The lighthouse was now maintained in shifts , and there were no families of guards left on the island. In 1987 the beacon was automated, but until 2002 beacon keepers alternated in shifts on the island.

On January 11, 2005, hurricane Inga caused severe damage. The breakers destroyed the breakwater wall around the facility and devastated the keeper's house. The lighthouse itself was not damaged and there were no people on the island that day.

Today's use of the building

Lighthouse and keeper's house

After the caretaker's house had been restored and a new fire protection wall with modern steel reinforcement had been built, the island with the entire system was transferred to the municipality of Austevoll in August 2006; only the responsibility for the maintenance and operation of the beacon remained with the coastal administration ( Kystverket ). The municipality and the Norwegian government made funds available to develop the site for tourism and thereby at least partially finance the maintenance of the buildings. In 2010 took over for these purposes by the municipalities Austevoll and Sund and the entrepreneur and former Storting -Abgeordneten Magnus Stangeland founded Foundation , the Stiftinga Marsteinen Fyr, responsibility for dock and buildings around the island made available to the public, for Events and Conferences. The three most important buildings have been completely renovated and redesigned so that since then 22 beds in 11 rooms as well as a conference and party room have been available. In the first two years, 2011 and 2012, the Austevoll Båt Og Cruise AS founded in 2006, operated the boat service to the island of the facility and then (destroyed retired but given the significant challenges investors , staff shortages) back.

In May 2013, the Panorama Conference Hotel , located about 10 km northeast of the Austefjord on Sotra , took over operations. It had further construction work carried out in the spring of 2013, including the construction of a new jetty . Since a helicopter is the only option for departure or departure when the sea is too rough , there is also a helipad on the island.
