Marstein (or Store Marstein ) is a small island , only about 300 × 400 m in size, off the west coast of Norway . It is located on the south side of the entrance to the Korsfjord and belongs to the municipality of Austevoll in Fylke Vestland .

The island is important because of the lighthouse Marstein fyr , which has been in operation since 1877, which marks the entrance to the Krossfjord and thus the southern approach to Bergen and the northern approach to the Hardangerfjord .

history

During the Second World War , after the German occupation of Norway , the island was occupied by German troops who installed a battery of eight guns . This resulted in two Allied bombing raids on the island, on July 25 and August 1, 1940, which caused significant damage.

During the post-war reconstruction in 1949/50, the old lighthouse was replaced by the current one. A new guard house was built and the entire facility was surrounded with a protective concrete wall. The lighthouse was now operated in shifts and there were no families of guards left on the ward. In 1987 the beacon was automated, but until 2002 beacon keepers alternated in shifts on the island.

On January 24, 1994 , the Norwegian frigate KNM Oslo (F 300), the lead ship of the Oslo class , stranded on the rocky ground off Marstein due to engine failure. The ship quickly got strong impact side , and two men of the crew fell overboard. One was rescued from the cold water after 18 minutes, but Corvette Captain Torbjørn Tellefsen was killed. The frigate was towed from the rock the next day, but then sank while being towed in the Korsfjord near Steinneset , Austevoll.

On January 11, 2005, hurricane Inga caused massive devastation on the island. The breakers destroyed the breakwater wall around the facility and devastated the keeper's house. The lighthouse itself was not damaged and there were no people on the island that day.

Todays use

The island together with the light tower system was transferred to the municipality of Austevoll in August 2006; only the responsibility for the maintenance and operation of the lighthouse remained with the coastal administration ( Kystverket ). The municipality and the Norwegian government made funds available to develop the place for tourism . In 2010, a foundation established for this purpose by the municipalities of Austevoll and Sund and the entrepreneur and former Storting MP Magnus Stangeland took over responsibility for the dock and buildings in order to make the island accessible to the public. The buildings were completely renovated and redesigned, so that 11 rooms with 22 beds as well as a conference and party room have been available since then. Since May 2013 the facility has been operated by the Panorama Conference Hotel , located about 10 km northeast of the Austefjord on Sotra . a. had a new jetty built. Since a helicopter is the only option for departure or departure when the sea is too rough , there is now a helicopter landing pad on the island.
