Halvorsen Gate

Tor Halvorsen (born November 24, 1930 in Skien , † November 4, 1987 ) was a Norwegian trade unionist and politician of the Arbeiderpartiet (Ap). Between 1973 and 1974 he was the environment minister and then until 1976 the social minister of his country. From 1977 to 1987 he was chairman of the Norwegian trade union confederation Landsorganisasjonen i Norge (LO).

Life

From 1946 to 1952 Tor Halvorsen worked in a shoe factory in Skien. He then worked as an installer until 1961 . From 1961 to 1968 he was the top union official at the aluminum producer Norsk Hydro . Until 1969 he acted as district secretary for Telemark at the Arbeidernes Opplysningsforbund (AOF). From 1969 to 1973 he finally worked as a secretary at Landsorganisasjonen i Norge (LO).

Halvorsen was a member of Skien's local parliament between 1963 and 1971. In the general election in 1961, he missed entry into the Norwegian parliament in Storting . On October 16, 1973 he was appointed Environment Minister in the Bratteli II government when the government was formed . On April 16, 1974, he initially took over the post of Minister of Social Affairs for Sonja Ludvigsen , who was suffering from cancer . On September 6, 1974, he finally gave up his post as Environment Minister and switched completely to the Ministry of Social Affairs. He remained minister until the departure of the Bratteli II government on January 15, 1976.

He then returned to his post as LO secretary. In 1977 he finally became the chairman of the association. He held this position until his death in November 1987. Between 1971 and 1983 he was also the chairman of the AOF.
