Herbert P. Wood
Herbert Poland Wood (born August 12, 1883 in South Attleboro , Massachusetts ; died April 27, 1925 in Massachusetts) was an American entomologist and parasitologist .
Life
Wood graduated from Massachusetts Agricultural College with a Bachelor of Science in 1907 . On November 1, 1907, he began a position at the Bureau of Entomology , which assigned him to the laboratory in Dallas , Texas . There Wood researched ticks and their natural predators such as the wasp Ixodiphagus hookeri until 1920 . This research was of paramount importance because a few years earlier the link between ticks and the ingestion of microorganisms and infectious diseases such as Rocky Mountain spotted fever , tularemia and Lyme disease had been discovered. Rocky Mountain spotted fever in particular claimed numerous lives every year. In 1913, Wood conducted field studies in the particularly hard hit Bitterroot Valley .
In 1919 Wood was in Illinois, where he developed a successful method for combating feather mites . The poultry industry had suffered considerable economic damage from the parasites. The following year he was transferred to the Department of Agriculture, which dealt with the control of the European corn borer and other grain and food pests.
In the winter semester of 1914–1915, Wood married while doing postgraduate studies at Harvard School of Tropical Medicine . Her marriage to Esther Davidson had three children. Wood left government in 1923 to start a business in Massachusetts. He died in April 1925.
Dedication name
In 1911 the US Parasitologist named Fred C. Bishopp a supposed "variety" of ixodidae Ixodes angustus Neumann , 1899 by Herbert P. Wood, Ixodes angustus var. Woodi . This taxon was raised in 1945 by the parasitologists Robert A. Cooley and Glen M. Kohls to the species Ixodes woodi Bishopp , 1911.
