Mercedes-Benz AA ( All Activity ) Vision is a concept vehicle from Mercedes-Benz , which was presented in 1996 and was built as a series model as Mercedes-Benz W 163 4ETS from 1997 to 2005.

presentation

AA Vision was unveiled in January 1996 at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit , Michigan , the largest auto show in the United States . The goal of Mercedes-Benz was to produce a Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) with "great driving comfort for discerning customers". Mercedes-Benz exhibited the vehicle at this auto show, as North America offers the largest market for comfortable SUVs. The vehicle was designed in the Mercedes-Benz plant in Sindelfingen and in Irvine in the state of California . The abbreviation AA stands for "All Activity" and outlines the range of uses of the car: whether asphalt or terrain, city or country, work or leisure, AA Vision is up to any situation.

features

One feature of the vehicle was an electronically controlled all-wheel drive , which was fitted as standard to the Mercedes-Benz W 163 4ETS in 1997 . Other special features were a variable interior, two sunroofs , a navigation system and a car phone with hands-free facility and operation via steering wheel buttons .

AA Vision differs from previous SUV vehicles in terms of “greater comfort” and “better driving behavior”; Mercedes-Benz had designed the vehicle because “future customers are more demanding”. The body THAT CONDITION - unlike previous SUVs - all of a piece. The front - inclined vehicle headlights and Mercedes star - appear independent and modern. With wide fenders , AA Vision appears sturdy and resistant.

The short overhangs at the front and rear would allow steep slope angles in the terrain. The aerodynamics are supposed to reduce fuel consumption and reduce wind noise. A luggage rack for bicycles , surfboards and snowboards is attached to the roof and a retractable trailer coupling is attached to the rear bumper .

The car speakers from Bose Corporation can be rotated to be able to listen to music outside the vehicle. The hold offers plenty of space for equipment and luggage. The hands-free microphone is located in the sun visor .

The body is on a rigid frame ; In addition to two front airbags , the vehicle has two side airbags - not yet standard in 1996. An anti-lock braking system ( ABS ) and the vehicle dynamics control ( electronic stability program , ESP ) provide safety

One innovation is the permanent all-wheel drive , which is electronically controlled: a lack of static friction on one wheel would be detected and the torque would be distributed to the other wheels in such a way that optimum traction would be achieved. In contrast to other all-wheel drives, AA Vision has round independent wheel suspensions , which should lead to good suspension comfort .

Serial production

AA Vision went into series production under 4ETS in the Mercedes-Benz W 163 class, design elements were adopted from the concept vehicle. The production model was produced in Tuscaloosa , Alabama . More than two thirds of the components come from North America ; the engines and the gearbox come from Germany .

With the Mercedes-Benz M-Class (especially the Mercedes-Benz W 163 as the successor to AA Vision ), Mercedes-Benz for the first time renounced "serious straightforwardness" and the "absolute off-road competence" that the Mercedes-Benz G -Class is common. This attracted new buyers, especially in the United States.
