The Mercedes-Benz W 164 was sold as the Mercedes-Benz M-Class and was the successor to the Mercedes-Benz W 163 .

It was presented at the North American International Auto Show in early 2005 and shares the technical basis with the R-Class (251 series) and the Mercedes-Benz GL . With the W 164, Mercedes introduced some innovations in the M-Class; the ladder frame of the previous model was replaced by a self-supporting body , which improves passive safety. While the predecessor model had a terrain reduction as standard, it was dispensed with in the standard equipment of the successor, since the majority of the vehicles are almost exclusively used on the road anyway. Production of the W 164 was discontinued in June 2011. The successor is the Mercedes-Benz W 166 .

Equipment

Off-road package

A special off-road package containing the following equipment was offered for an additional charge:

  • one center and one rear axle limited slip differential with 100 percent lock
  • a gear reduction with the option of engaging reverse gear in the low-range setting while driving (shift-on-the-move)
  • an underrun protection
  • a compass
  • a manual mode for the automatic transmission
  • a five-stage setting range for the optionally available air suspension . Three settings can be freely selected.

AMG sports package

As for almost all other models, there was also a sports package for the M-Class. This contained: AMG front apron, running boards, AMG rear apron and 21-inch AMG light-alloy wheels with five spokes all around in size 265/40 R21 and oval AMG tailpipes.

Edition 10 special model

Between the end of 2007 and mid-2008 there was a special model called Edition 10 . This name indicated the ten-year existence of the M-Class. The anniversary SUV offered, among other things, 20-inch wheels, bi-xenon headlights and shiny titanium applications. The interior was equipped with a two-tone leather interior, sports instruments and pedals in stainless steel.

Grand Edition special model

The Grand Edition special model was offered from May 2010 until production was discontinued in June 2011 . This model was recognizable by headlights with a dark background, LED daytime running lights and AMG radiator grille. Furthermore, an underbody protection made of aluminum was installed in the front and rear of this special model. It also contained darkened rear lights, thermally insulating blue glass and 19-inch light-alloy wheels with Y-shaped spokes.

Facelift

The facelift was presented at the end of April 2008 and delivered from autumn 2008. The models of the ML 63 AMG were delivered from January 2009. A revised bumper and headlights with a step in the lower edge determined the revised front view of the SUV. The radiator grille was now larger, set lower and was structured by three wide, black slats with angular air openings and chrome edging. Fog lights located far outside and a newly designed underrun protection made it appear wider. The rear got a redesigned bumper with integrated reflectors and smoked glass reversing lights. A roof rail and larger exterior mirrors were part of the standard equipment.

In the interior there was a new four-spoke leather multifunction steering wheel with glossy chrome applications and standard gearshift paddles. The door fittings were covered with a leather imitation and the seats could be equipped with a four-stage lumbar support on request. In addition, the M-Class was equipped as standard with the preventive occupant protection PreSafe and NeckPro head restraints.

Models and engines

In Germany, the ML was available with V6 and V8 petrol and diesel engines.

In the USA, in addition to the ML 350, ML 550, ML 63 AMG and the ML 350 BlueTEC, an ML 450 HYBRID was offered in which the combustion engine of the ML 350 was combined with two electric motors. If necessary, the driving force of the motor could be supported by the electric motors.

Hybrid

The ML 450 HYBRID has a combustion engine and two electric motors. The electrical control of the two-mode hybrid system shifts the power output variably from the electrical drive train to the mechanical one with increasing engine loads and higher speeds. Both electric motors are integrated in the gear housing and have different tasks. The first electric motor is arranged closer to the combustion engine, has an output of 62 kW, offers a torque of 235 Nm and is specially designed for power and low losses. The electric motor placed at the transmission output has an output of 60 kW, provides 260 Nm and is intended for purely electric starting and acceleration. In first and third gear, both electric motors work synchronously and either provide additional energy for acceleration or store the kinetic energy when the vehicle is decelerating. In second and fourth gear, one electric motor is available for acceleration, the other for energy recovery. To enable the three motors to work together, a gear unit with the two electric motors, three planetary gear sets and four clutches is installed, which is controlled by an electronic controller. In addition, there are technical systems such as an automatic start-stop system to save fuel or a launch control for dynamic starting. The electric motors only park in E mode. The ML 450 Hybrid has a system output of 250 kW and consumption is around 20% lower than that of the ML 350; it can also drive purely electrically over a distance of 2.5 km.
