The Mercedes-Benz 170 S was 170 mm longer, 104 mm wider and better equipped than the 170 V. The engine had a larger displacement, instead of 1697 cm³ with 38 PS (28 kW) it had 1767 cm³ and an output of 52 PS ( 38 kW), which allowed a top speed of 120 km / h. The front suspension was also different: double wishbones with coil springs and no longer double transverse leaf springs as in the 170 V.

This model, which was available as a sedan, as a Cabriolet A and as a Cabriolet B, was the first vehicle version from Mercedes-Benz to be designated with an "S"; it was often used as a management car. (The term S-Class came about later.) The 170 S was not an initial or new development, but a modified 230 (W 153). The 230 was almost identical in shape and construction and was built until 1943. The successor model, the 170 VX, had been in development since 1938 and 12 test vehicles were completed in 1941. They had all the characteristics of the later production car. At the end of 1943 a prototype of the later 170 S was presented, but due to the war it was no longer produced.

Model 170 Sb

In 1952 the Mercedes-Benz 170 Sb replaced the 170 S model. The internal designation was now W 191 . The two cabriolet models were no longer available as these body variants were now integrated into the Mercedes 220 (W 187) series . So only the sedan was available. The center shift had given way to a fashionable steering wheel shift, there was a start button on the dashboard, the camshaft was driven by a chain and the heating had been improved.

It received the engine of the model 170 D with 1767 cm³ and 40 PS (29 kW; OM 636 ). The performance was on the same level (100 km / h top speed) as that of the smaller car. The 170 DS was built from January 1952 to August 1953 in an edition of 12,985 units.

Models 170 SV and 170 SD

With the appearance of the new pontoon Mercedes 180 in 1953, the now outdated S models were offered much cheaper. For this purpose, the voluminous bodies of the S were placed on the chassis of the 170 V and 170 D. The gasoline engine lost 7 hp and only allowed a top speed of 116 km / h. The new models Mercedes-Benz 170 SV and Mercedes-Benz 170 SD were internally called the W 136 VIII and W 136 VIII D , respectively . Better-off prospective buyers switched to the 220 model , which had been available since 1951 . The W 191 series was discontinued in 1955 without a successor.
