The C 140 series is the coupé version of the 140 sedan from Mercedes-Benz . The luxury car was presented for the first time in January 1992 at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit (USA). Two months later, it was presented in Europe at the Geneva Motor Show .

Initially, two variants were offered from October 1992: the 500 SEC ( S- Class E injection engine- C oupé) with a V8 engine (235 kW) and the 600 SEC with a V12 unit (290 kW). Their engines and most of the technology are similar to those of the corresponding 140 sedan. With numerous extras ex works, both were the top models in the Mercedes-Benz passenger car range. In terms of style, however, they are more independent than their predecessor models in the C 126 series .

At the Geneva Motor Show in March 1994, two years after its European premiere, the Coupé family was reinforced with the S 420 Coupé . Like its four-door counterpart in the sedan series, the coupé is equipped with a 4.2-liter four-valve V8 engine with an output of 205 kW.

Three fundamental technical innovations were available for the first time in the 600 SEC : In May 1995 a completely newly developed five-speed automatic transmission with slip-controlled torque converter lock-up clutch and electronic control was introduced, which reduces fuel consumption. The new automatic transmission is significantly lighter and more compact than comparable transmissions with five speed levels and could also be manufactured more cheaply because the number of individual parts could be reduced by almost 40 percent. Another innovation was introduced at the same time: the C 140 series (first in the S600 Coupe) was the first Mercedes with the Electronic Stability Program ESP, which supports the driver in critical situations by counteracting the yaw moment (rotation around the vertical axis) through computer-controlled braking intervention and thus contributes to driving safety. It was also in 1995 the first Mercedes with the GPS navigation system autopilot system APS, including CD-ROM , maps and color screen.

Since September 1995 the electronically controlled automatic transmission was also available in the eight-cylinder coupés; the ESP was available on request for both models from the same time.

Model maintenance

1993

Similar to the other types of passenger car from Mercedes-Benz, new type designations were introduced in June 1993 for the S-Class coupés; For example, the 600 SEC became the S 600 Coupé . The nameplate on the trunk lid only documented the engine size and class, but not the body shape, which was already apparent.

1996

In June 1996 the type designations for the coupés were changed again. Since then, this series has been called the CL-Class.

The CL-Coupés were also presented with discreet stylistic modifications: The revised bumpers with the integrated sensors for the standard Parktronic ultrasonic parking aid , which made the previous dipsticks in the rear fenders superfluous, are particularly recognizable from the outside . Further innovations were: Xenon headlights (only for low beam ) with dynamic headlight range control , cruise control (can be activated from 30 km / h), standard sidebags and seat occupancy detection for the front passenger seat.

Production of the model ended in September 1998, almost exactly six years after the main series start. A total of 26,022 coupés of the C 140 series were produced at the Sindelfingen plant .

The successor, the C 215 , came onto the market in August 1999.

Existence in Germany

The inventory of Mercedes-Benz C 140 is listed according to the manufacturer (HSN) and type code (TSN) in Germany according to the Federal Motor Transport Authority . Until 2007, the inventory included the number of vehicles registered as well as the number of temporary shutdowns. Since 2008, the inventory has only included "flowing traffic" including the seasonal license plates.
