The Mercedes F1 W05 Hybrid , originally Mercedes F1 W05 is the Formula 1 - racing cars from Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 Team for the Formula 1 2014 season . It was the sixth Mercedes Formula 1 car. The car was presented on January 28, 2014 at the Circuito de Jerez .

Technology and development

A front wing of the Mercedes F1 W05 Hybrid

The Mercedes F1 W05 Hybrid was the successor model of the Mercedes F1 W04 , although the vehicle differed from the predecessor model both externally and technically due to changed rules for the 2014 Formula 1 season .

The car was powered by the newly developed Mercedes-Benz PU106A Hybrid , a 1.6-liter V6 engine with a turbocharger . Mercedes had also developed the ERS and the eight-speed transmission itself. Due to the regulations, there was only one central exhaust pipe that was above the rear light.

Due to the rule changes for the 2014 season, the nose of the vehicle was lower than that of the vehicle from the previous year. Similar to the Ferrari F14 T , the front dropped off relatively sharply at the level of the front wheel suspension. In contrast to many other vehicles from the 2014 season, the nose was relatively wide and did not extend beyond the front wing.

The tires were supplied by Pirelli , a standard supplier for Formula 1. The magnesium wheels came from Advanti Racing .

Painting and sponsorship

The Mercedes F1 W05 Hybrid was predominantly silver-colored , based on the Mercedes Silver Arrows . The side pods and parts of the front and rear wing were painted cyan because of the main sponsor Petronas . Stickers from Daimler AG (with the Mercedes-Benz brand ) and advertising lettering from BlackBerry , Swissquote , Puma and Pirelli were attached to the vehicle.

driver

Mercedes also competed in the 2014 season with the driver duo Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg . DTM driver Pascal Wehrlein was used as test and reserve driver .

2014 season

The great potential of the vehicle was already evident in the test drives before the start of the season. Hamilton and Rosberg achieved 18 pole positions and 16 wins in the 19 races of the season , eleven of which were a one-two. In addition, the drivers drove the fastest race lap twelve times . Mercedes was able to win the constructors' world championship early at the Russian Grand Prix , the 16th race. In the last race of the season, Hamilton secured his second world title with his eleventh win of the season, Rosberg was runner-up with five wins.

With 701 World Championship points in one season, Mercedes had set a new record with the W05 Hybrid, and no vehicle had achieved 31 podium places in one season before.
