Career

Beginnings in motorsport (2003-2011)

Wehrlein began his motorsport career in karting in 2003 , in which he was active until 2009. In 2010 Wehrlein switched to formula racing and competed for Mücke Motorsport in the ADAC Formula Masters . He won a race and finished the season with a total of four podium finishes in sixth place in the drivers' standings. In 2011, Wehrlein contested his second season in the ADAC Formula Masters for Mücke Motorsport. He won 8 out of 24 races and made it onto the podium 13 times. At the end of the season he secured the title with 331 to 310 points ahead of Emil Bernstorff . Wehrlein is the first Mücke driver to win this racing series.

Formula 3 Euro Series (2012-2013)

In 2012 , Wehrlein stayed with Mücke Motorsport and started in the Formula 3 Euro Series . In addition Wehrlein was in 2012 in the 3 Championship Formula European evaluation justified. This included the first and third races on a Formula 3 Euro Series race weekend and several events in the British Formula 3 Championship . At the Norisring , he finished third in the Formula 3 Euro Series, but was classified as the winner since there were only guest starters ahead of him. At the Nürburgring , he won another race in the Formula 3 Euro Series, which was also part of the European Formula 3. In the Formula 3 Euro Series, Wehrlein finished as the best rookie in second place in the overall standings with 229 to 240 points behind Daniel Juncadella and thus prevailed against Felix Rosenqvist , who was fourth, within the team . In the European Formula 3, Wehrlein was in fourth place and lost to Rosenqvist, who achieved third place.

In 2013 , Wehrlein stayed with Mücke Motorsport and initially competed in the European Formula 3 championship. He took part in the first race weekend in Monza and won a race, finished second and third once.

DTM (2013-2015)

Mücke Motorsport (2013)

The main focus in 2013, however, was on the DTM , where he was given a cockpit in a Mercedes by Mücke . This made him the youngest DTM driver to date. His teammate was Daniel Juncadella . In his debut race at Hockenheim , Wehrlein was now in the lead. He finished in eleventh place. One race later at Brands Hatch , he scored his first point in tenth after starting the race from position 20. In the race that followed, he repeated this placement. After two races without points, Wehrlein again finished tenth at the Nürburgring and also achieved the first fastest lap of his DTM career. At the end of the season, Wehrlein finished 22nd and last in the drivers' standings.

HWA (2014–2015)

Pascal Wehrlein in Oschersleben 2015

For the 2014 season, Wehrlein moved from Mercedes to HWA within the DTM squad . At the race at the EuroSpeedway Lausitz , Wehrlein achieved his first pole position and his first victory. This made him the youngest ever DTM race winner. Wehrlein finished the season in eighth place as the second-best Mercedes driver. In addition, Wehrlein took over the position of substitute driver for the Mercedes Formula 1 team during the 2014 season .

In 2015 Wehrlein stayed with HWA in the DTM. He chose the number 94 as the starting number for the season. In the Saturday race of the season opener in Hockenheim, he achieved second place. In the fifth race of the season in Nuremberg , he scored his first win of the season. After finishing second in the Spielberg race on Saturday , he managed to win another race in Wolokolamsk . After finishing third again on the podium at the Nürburgring , he won the championship one race before the end of the season. This made him the youngest DTM overall winner to date. At the end of the season he was 169 to 150 points ahead of Jamie Green . In addition, he continued to work as a Formula 1 test driver at Mercedes. In addition to this commitment, he completed Formula 1 test drives for Force India .

Formula 1 (2016-2017)

Manor Racing (2016)

Wehrlein in the Manor 2016

In 2016 Wehrlein switched to Formula 1 and was given a permanent cockpit at Manor Racing . As in the DTM, he chose the 94 as his starting number. On his debut in Australia he was 16. His only point of the season he scored in tenth in Austria . He finished his first Formula 1 season in 19th place overall.

Sauber Motorsport (2017)

In 2017 he moved to Sauber and became a team-mate of Marcus Ericsson . He skipped the first two races for health reasons and was represented by Antonio Giovinazzi . At the Spanish Grand Prix he scored his first points for Sauber in eighth place. At the end of the season he finished 18th overall. After the season, his involvement in Formula 1 ended after Sauber signed Charles Leclerc as his successor. Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff stated in October 2017 that Mercedes would no longer support Wehrlein in a cockpit search : At some point, the time had come for everyone to stand on their own two feet .

Return to the DTM (2018)

After Pascal Wehrlein did not receive a Formula 1 cockpit for 2018, he returned to the DTM. There, as in the period from 2013 to 2015, he competed for Mercedes. The contract ran for one year, as Mercedes left the DTM at the end of the 2018 season. In the first two races of the season in Hockenheim, he finished fifth and sixth. At the second race weekend at the Lausitzring , he finished third on the podium for the first time after his return to the series on Sunday. In the further course of the season, despite regular placements in the points, he did not manage to classify himself on the podium again and so he ended the season in eighth place overall.

In September it was announced that his contract as a Mercedes works driver, which expires at the end of the season, will not be extended.

FIA Formula E Championship (since 2019)

For the 2018/19 season, Wehrlein switched to the FIA Formula E Championship and became a regular driver at Mahindra Racing . There he took over the cockpit from Nick Heidfeld , who became a test and reserve driver as well as a consultant. As in the Formula 1 World Championship and the DTM, he chose starting number 94.

He missed the opening race, the Diriyya E-Prix , because he had not received an early release from his HWA contract. In his debut at the Marrakech E-Prix he was eliminated on the first lap after an involuntary collision, at the Santiago E-Prix he achieved his first podium result with second place. He also finished the Mexico City E-Prix in second place after running out of energy a few meters from the finish line in the lead and having to let Lucas di Grassi pass. A subsequent time penalty threw him back to sixth place. In the further course of the season he could not achieve these results, so that at the end of the season he finished twelfth in the championship with 58 points.

Others

Wehrlein is completing an apprenticeship as a precision mechanic in his father's company. His mother is from Mauritius . In 2011 and 2012 he was a candidate for the Deutsche Post Speed Academy , which he won in 2011, and is also funded by the ADAC Sports Foundation. In 2012 he finished second in the Deutsche Post Speed Academy .

On May 27, 2014 he had an accident while sponsoring Mercedes in the training camp of the German national soccer team in South Tyrol , in which a vacationer and a marshal were injured.
