Emil Gustav Johan Bernstorff (born June 7, 1993 in Harrow , England ) is a former British - Danish racing driver . He started in the GP3 series in 2014 and 2015 .

Career

Bernstorff began his motorsport career at the age of eight in karting , in which he was active until 2008. After a one-year break, he switched to formula racing and started for Jamun Racing in the British Formula Ford . With a second place as the best result, he finished seventh overall, while his teammate Scott Pye won the championship title. He also took part in two Benelux Formula Ford races. In 2011 Bernstorff started for Motopark Academy in the ADAC Formula Masters . He won five races and was on the podium a total of 13 times. At the end of the season he was third in the overall ranking behind Pascal Wehrlein and Sven Müller . However, the evaluation was still provisional, as an appeal negotiation regarding a race result was in progress. The rating was corrected in February and Bernstorff moved up to second place. With 310 to 331 he was defeated by Wehrlein. If Bernstorff hadn't retired from the lead shortly before the end of the race, he would have won the championship.

In 2012 Bernstorff switched to ma-con Motorsport in the Formula 3 Euro Series . He was also entitled to points in the European Formula 3 championship in 2012 . With a third place as the best result, he reached tenth place in both ratings. In 2013 , Bernstorff drove for Lotus in the German Formula 3 Cup . He won six races and at the end of the season was third behind his team-mates Marvin Kirchhöfer and Artjom Markelow . In addition, Bernstorff came third for the Prema Powerteam in the Formula 3 Masters and he took part in two races of the European F3 Open . Outside of Formula 3, he won the Formula Middle East .

In 2014 Bernstorff switched to Carlin in the GP3 series . He won a race and was on the podium five times. While his teammate Alex Lynn was champion with 207 points, Bernstorff achieved fifth place in the overall classification with 134 points. In 2015 Bernstorff completed his second GP3 season for Arden International . He won two races and moved up to fourth place overall as the best driver on his team.

GP2 series 2016 was Bernstorff without full-time engagement. He took part in the final race weekend of the GP2 series for Arden International as the successor to Jimmy Eriksson .

Personal

Bernstorff was born in the United Kingdom , grew up there and mostly starts with a British license. His parents are Danish . He has ancestors from different nations, including Danish and German nobles. Only in 2010 did he start with a Danish racing license.
