Prema Powerteam (formerly Prema Racing ) is an Italian racing team headquartered in Milan , founded in 1983 by Angelo Rosin and Giorgio Galvanin . In 1994 the name was changed to Prema Powerteam. The motorsport team is currently represented in Formula 2 , Formula 3 , German and Italian Formula 4 and in the new Formula Regional European Championship racing series .

history

From 2000 to 2007 Prema was a partner of Toyota Racing for their Young Drivers Program. In the following years Prema also became a partner of many current Formula 1 teams, such as Renault , Mercedes , Red Bull Racing and Ferrari .

The current Formula 1 drivers who started for Prema include: Pierre Gasly , Charles Leclerc , Lance Stroll , George Russell , Antonio Giovinazzi . and Esteban Ocon

Formula 2

The team has been competing in the GP2 series since 2016 and is currently still represented after being renamed the FIA Formula 2 Championship . In 2016 they became champions in the team classification, in 2017 they were very narrowly defeated by the Russian team Russian Time and in 2018 they achieved fifth place in the team classification. In 2016, both drivers, the current Formula 1 drivers Pierre Gasly and Antonio Giovinazzi , were first and second in the drivers' standings. In 2019 the new season started with the driver pairing Mick Schumacher and Sean Gelael . For the 2020 season, Gelael was replaced by the reigning Formula 3 champion Robert Shwartzman .

Formula 3

Since its reintroduction in 2012 , the team has competed in the European Formula 3 championship and won the series six times, including with Formula 1 drivers Esteban Ocon and Lance Stroll and with Mick Schumacher , the son of the seven-time Formula 1 -World Champion Michael Schumacher . The team is currently also competing in the new FIA Formula 3 championship and most recently won the driver and team championship with Robert Shwartzman, Jehan Daruvala and Marcus Armstrong . Prema has achieved four victories so far, the sprint and main races in Spain and France, in this championship. In Spielberg, they were able to secure second and third places in the sprint race after leading the race for a long time but losing the lead in the last lap due to a collision between Armstrong and Shwartzman. Armstrong slipped to 19th place and Shwartzman was the first to cross the finish line, but was subsequently given a five-second penalty and thus lost first place. The third Prema driver Daruvala inherited third place.

For the 2020 season, Prema will be lining up with the reigning Formula Regional Champion Frederik Vesti , the Formula Renault Champion and Renault Driver Academy driver Oscar Piastri and Logan Sargeant .

Formula 4

In 2014 and 2015 Prema joined the newly founded Italian Formula 4 and German Formula 4 and has been represented since their existence. The team won the Italian series in 2014 , 2015 , 2016 and 2018 respectively . In 2017 you had to give in to the Italian team Bhaitech as second . In 2019 Prema finished second again behind Van Amersfoort Racing .

The German series was won in 2016 and 2017 . In 2018 they finished third behind Charouz Racing System and Van Amersfoort Racing. In 2019 the team again achieved third place in the team ranking.

Formula Regional European Championship

In 2019 Prema competed in the new Formula Regional European Championship racing series and, in addition to the team classification, also won the drivers' championship by Frederik Vesti. Vesti was able to win 13 races.

In the 2020 season , the team with Gianluca Petecof and the Ferrari Academy driver Arthur Leclerc , the brother of Formula 1 driver Charles Leclerc, will compete.
