Santino Ferrucci
Santino Ferrucci (born May 31, 1998 in Woodbury , Connecticut ) is an American automobile racing driver . He started in the FIA Formula 2 Championship in 2017 and 2018 . He has been a full-time pilot in the IndyCar Series since 2019 .
Career
Ferrucci began his motorsport career in karting in 2005 , where he remained active until 2012. He won the Comer Cadet class on the Florida Winter Tour in 2008 and 2009 . In 2012 he finished sixth in the CIK-FIA-KF3 European Championship. In the winter of 2012/13 he entered formula racing and came eleventh in the SBF2000 Winter Series. In 2013 he started in the F2000 Championship Series . He entered the series for the fourth of seven events and finished in the top five in every race. In the overall standings, he was fifth.
In 2014 Ferrucci moved to Europe and got into Formula 3 . Since he had not yet reached the minimum age of 16, he was only allowed to take part in races from June. First he started for EuroInternational at two German Formula 3 events . He achieved a podium placement with a second place. He then took part in five European Formula 3 championship events for EuroInternational. Fourth place was his best result. He then left EuroInternational and switched to Fortec Motorsports . As a guest starter, he went to a racing weekend in the British Formula 3 Championship . He finished twice in first and once in third place. Ferrucci finally competed for Fortec Motorsports in the last two events of the European Formula 3 championship. In the driver standings of this series he was in 19th place at the end of the season. At the Macau Grand Prix , Ferrucci finished eighth with Fortec Motorsports. In early 2015 , Ferrucci competed for Giles Motorsport in the Toyota Racing Series . With a win, he finished the drivers' standings in third place overall. Ferrucci then competed for Mücke Motorsport in the 2015 European Formula 3 Championship . With a second place as the best result, he was eleventh overall.
In 2016 Ferrucci switched to DAMS in the GP3 series . Third place was his best result and he was twelfth overall. He was also a Formula 1 test driver at Haas . He also made two guest starts in the North American Lamborghini Super Trofeo , where he crossed the finish line first both times. In the 2017 GP3 series , Ferrucci stayed with DAMS.
During the 2017 season, Ferrucci switched to the FIA Formula 2 Championship with Trident . With 4 points he finished 22nd in the drivers' championship. In 2018 he continued to compete for Trident in Formula 2. On July 18, 2018, Team Trident announced the dismissal of the driver.
In July 2018, Ferrucci was banned from four F2 races (Hungary and Belgium) after intentional contact with teammate Maini after the sprint race at Silverstone over the weekend of the British Grand Prix. When he purposely pushed Maini off the track, he was disqualified from the sprint race results at Silverstone because of another incident. It was found that he had driven his car from the paddock into the pit lane with just one glove. He used his mobile phone and received a fine of 60,000 euros. The stewards at Silverstone heard testimony from the Trident team that Ferrucci, having ridden in teammate Maini, was deliberate and willful, but not from Ferrucci himself, who was absent, citing a mandatory FIA drug test and family emergency, to which he promptly had to return to the United States after the sprint race.
On July 18, Ferrucci was unceremoniously fired from the Trident F2 team, citing behavior problems and the contractually required non-payment of funds. Trident alleged that money had been made available for the Detroit IndyCar race while finding that Ferrucci was in default on the F2 debt against them. An Italian court ordered Ferrucci to pay Trident € 502,000 plus interest and legal fees for failing to make payments. 6 days later, Trident announced that their GP3 driver Alessio Lorandi would be his successor for the remainder of the season.
Despite the legal disputes, he contested the last two races of the IndyCar season with Dale Coyne Racing. In his first full season, he finished 13th. He was named Rookie of the Year at the Indy 500. The best results were three 4th places.
