Josef Newgarden
Josef Newgarden (born December 22, 1990 in Hendersonville , Tennessee ) is an American automobile racing driver . He became the Indy Lights master in 2011 . He has been competing in the IndyCar Series since 2012, where he won the championship title in 2017 and 2019.
Career
Newgarden began his motorsport career in karting at the age of 13 and was mainly active in this sport until 2006. Among other things, he won the TAG Junior World Championship in 2005 and 2006. Even after switching to formula racing, he competed in several kart races until 2009.
In the 2006/2007 season Newgarden made his formula racing debut in the Skip Barber Southern Regional Series and won the runner-up in this series with three straight wins. He then started in the 2007 season in the national Skip Barber series and finished sixth overall with two wins. In 2008 Newgarden started to race in various racing series. His main focus was again on the national Skip Barber, in which he won the runner-up title behind Conor Daly with three wins .
In 2009 Newgarden left North America and moved to Europe for the British Formula Ford . Although he won the most races with nine wins, he was beaten by James Cole at the end of the season and came second overall. He also started in the first three races of the Formula Palmer Audi and won two of these races. In 2010 Newgarden started for Carlin in the newly founded GP3 series . He scored points in only three races and finished 18th overall at the end of the season.
In 2011 Newgarden returned to North America and competed for Sam Schmidt Motorsports in the Indy Lights . He got along in the Indy Lights straight away and won the season opener in St. Petersburg . His win at Loudon , where Newgarden had overtaken all the other drivers, was particularly impressive . With a total of five wins, Newgarden won the championship prematurely one race before the end of the season. With 553 to 459 he was almost 100 points ahead of the runner-up, his team-mate Esteban Guerrieri .
From 2012 Newgarden made his debut for Sarah Fisher Hartman Racing in the IndyCar Series . He received a three-year contract with the racing team. He finished his debut race in St. Petersburg in eleventh place. In Long Beach , Newgarden started from second place, but was eliminated in the first lap. At the following race in São Paulo , he achieved the fastest race lap. In training for the next race, the Indianapolis 500 , he achieved several best times and qualified as the best Honda driver in seventh place. He did not reach the goal. At the Honda Indy Toronto , Newgarden was in fourth position with six laps to go. A collision with Simon Pagenaud , however, meant that he dropped back to 13th place. In an accident in Sonoma , Newgarden sustained a hand injury and paused the following race. With an eleventh place as the best result, he finished the season in 23rd place. In 2013 Newgarden achieved his first top 10 finish in the second race of the season in Birmingham with a ninth place. Two races later in São Paulo , he finished fifth. He repeated this result in Long Pond and Houston . In Baltimore , he finished second for the first time in his career on the podium. In the overall standings he improved to 14th place overall. In 2014 , Newgarden started his third IndyCar season for Sarah Fisher Hartman Racing. At the race in Newton he achieved the only podium finish of the season with a second place. The championship finished Newgarden in 13th place overall.
In 2015 , Newgarden competed in the IndyCar Series for CFH Racing , a racing team that emerged from the merger of Sarah Fisher Hartman Racing and Ed Carpenter Racing . In Birmingham he won his first IndyCar race. It was also the first victory for the new racing team. When Honda Indy Toronto was followed by another win and in the Oval race in Newton and Pocono he reached the second place. In the overall standings, Newgarden improved to seventh place. In the 2016 IndyCar Series , Newgarden stayed with his team. During the winter break, several investors left the racing team, so that the racing team operated as Ed Carpenter Racing . After finishing third in Birmingham , he qualified for the Indianapolis 500 in second place. He finished the race in third place. At the next oval race, the Firestone 600 , Newgarden had a serious accident. After a driving mistake by Daly, Newgarden hit the lane twice. Although he left his car on his own, he collapsed shortly afterwards and was hospitalized. Newgarden fractured his right collarbone and fractured his right hand. The race was interrupted due to rain and only continued two months later. Two weeks after his accident, Newgarden returned to his vehicle and finished eighth at Elkhart Lake . He drove with severe pain and 13 screws in his shoulder. At the following race in Iowa Newgarden showed an impressive performance. As a short oval, the Iowa Speedway was one of the most physically demanding routes of the season. He dominated the race and led 282 of 300 laps. In places he had lapped all other opponents except for one driver. His victory in the race came four weeks after his serious accident. In the further course of the season Newgarden reached the podium again with a second place in Watkins Glen . He finished the season as the best non- Penske driver in fourth place overall. Although Ed Carpenter Racing tried to keep working with him, Newgarden announced after the end of the season that he would be leaving the team.
For the IndyCar Series 2017, Newgarden is moving to Team Penske as the successor to Juan Pablo Montoya .
