The Formula Palmer Audi was a single-seater - racing series , which existed from 1998 to 2010 and its race mainly in the United Kingdom austrug. The series was named after the former British Formula 1 racing driver Jonathan Palmer and the automaker Audi .

overview

Formula Palmer Audi was founded by Jonathan Palmer to enable racing drivers to enter formula racing at a much lower cost than similar series, and to pave the way for series such as Formula 3000 , Indy Lights and later Formula 2. In contrast to all comparable championships, the cars were not prepared by different, rival racing teams, but were used and serviced by a single, almost 50-person in-house team based near the Bedford Autodrome . The series was discontinued at the end of 2010 in order to be able to pool all resources for the FIA Formula 2 Championship, which was also initiated by Palmer and whose concept was largely adopted by Formula Palmer Audi.

In addition to the actual racing series, the Formula Palmer Audi Autumn Trophy (1998–2000 as Winter Series , 2002–2008) and the Formula Palmer Audi Shootout (2007–2008) were held.

vehicle

The same standard vehicle was used in all 13 years: a car developed by van Diemen with an Audi turbo engine and Avon tires, but which has been modified regularly by the MSV team over the years . In addition, an old idea from Formula 1 in the 1980s was taken up under the name Overboost , which was later taken over by numerous series - including the Champ Car in 2004 : the boost pressure could be increased at short notice with a switch in the cockpit, so that the driver could overtake 60 hp more were available for eight seconds.
