Hewland

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hewland Engineering Ltd. is a British manufacturer of transmissions for racing vehicles and was founded in 1957 by Michael "Mike" Hewland (1922–18 August 2012 ). Hewland was the first to offer racing transmissions specially made to customer specifications. The first, the “Hewland Mk1”, was a gearbox from the VW Beetle that was adapted for Lola’s Formula Junior vehicles . Within a few years, Hewland was only using VW housings and manufacturing gear sets and gearbox covers itself. These products were widely used in Formula Junior and Formula 3 . The first gearbox designed by Hewland itself was the HD4 in 1963, where HD stands for Hewland Design. By omitting the synchronization of the Beetle transmission, there was room for a fifth forward gear. The gears were in constant mesh, had straight teeth and had claw clutches. The drivers quickly coped with the shift bumps because the rotating masses were small. In addition to fifth gear and the tight gradation, the gearboxes had the advantage that gear ratios could be quickly adapted to the track before a race. These transmissions were used in many US and British racing cars.
