Akshay Luciano Bacheta (born April 26, 1990 in Romford , England ) is a British racing driver . He won the FIA Formula 2 Championship in 2012 .

Career

Bacheta began his motorsport career in karting in 2004 and was active in this sport until 2006. At the beginning of his career he received financial support from his father's company. In 2006 he switched to the T-Cars series , in which racing drivers between the ages of 14 and 17 drove limousines , and won the championship title straight away. He also was in the autumn championship of the Formula Palmer Audi debut in Formula racing . He won two races and was third overall. In 2007 he competed in the regular Formula Palmer Audi and again finished third. He won four races. He then took part again in the autumn championship of Formula Palmer Audi and reached 14th place in the championship.

In 2008 Bacheta switched to the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup and was 23rd in the overall standings. He also took part in six races of the Western European Formula Renault . In 2009 he stayed in the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup and improved to 16th overall. In addition, he competed in two races of the Western European Formula Renault. In 2010 the Bacheta contested its third season in the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup. This season he won a race for the first time and was runner-up behind Kevin Korjus with a total of two wins . He also took part in two races each of the British and Northern European Formula Renault and competed as a guest starter in four races of the European Formula BMW .

At the beginning of 2011, Bacheta tested for Mercedes in the DTM . However, there was no engagement. Bacheta finally switched to the GP3 series at RSC Mücke Motorsport in 2011 . A Bacheta accident hit the headlines during training on the Hungaroring . He left the track in an unpaved run-off zone, his car took off, overturned and landed headlong on the guardrail. Bacheta was lucky that he didn't hit anywhere with his helmet. He was uninjured and took part in the rest of the race weekend. After the racing weekend on the Hungaroring, his involvement in the GP3 series ended prematurely. He finished 22nd in the overall standings, while his teammate Nigel Melker took 3rd place. Bacheta then switched to the FIA Formula 2 Championship , in which he took part in two events . In the drivers' championship he reached 13th place with a fifth place as the best result. In 2012 , Bacheta competed in Formula 2 for the entire season. He managed to win the first four races. This made him the first driver in the series, which has existed since 2009, to win four races in a row. Later in the season he won another race. With a total of ten podium finishes, he won the championship title with 231.5 to 210 points ahead of Mathéo Tuscher . As a reward for winning the title, Williams gave him the opportunity to complete a Formula 1 test.

In 2013 , Bacheta received a cockpit in the Auto GP at Zele Racing . He won a race and finished second once. At the halfway point of the season, he lost the cockpit and was no longer used. In the drivers' championship he was in eleventh place.

Bacheta's parents are from India . He also has ancestors from Italy . He has been managed by Anthony Hamilton since 2011.
