Mirko Bortolotti (born January 10, 1990 in Trento ) is an Italian racing driver who started his career with an Austrian racing license.

In 2008 he won the Italian Formula 3 Championship , in 2011 the FIA Formula 2 Championship and in 2013 the Eurocup Mégane Trophy .

Career

From 1995 to 2005 he was mainly active in karting . Initially with an Austrian racing license in the Austrian championship, which he won several times. Towards the end of his kart career, he was increasingly on the road with an Italian racing license in Italy, as well as in the European kart championship . In 2005 he switched to the single-seater racing and competed in the Italian Formula Gloria, the Italian Formula Junior 1600 and winter series of the Italian Formula Renault . In 2006 Bortolotti drove in Formula Azzura and finished second overall. In addition, he took part in some races of the Italian Formula Junior 1600 and was fourth in the winter series of the Italian Formula Renault.

In 2007 Bortolotti moved to the Italian Formula 3 championship at Corbetta Competizioni . He won a race and finished his debut season on the fourth championship course. Internally, he prevailed against Fabrizio Crestani with 80 to 73 points . In addition, Bortolotti started in the winter series of the Italian Formula Renault. In 2008 Bortolotti moved to Lucidi Motors within the Italian Formula 3 championship . He won nine out of 16 races and was only off the podium once. With 150 to 127 points, he decided the championship against Edoardo Piscopo for himself. As a reward for winning the Italian Formula 3 championship, Bortolotti took part in Formula 1 test drives at Scuderia Ferrari in Fiorano . He managed to set a new lap record.

In 2009 Bortolotti was accepted into the support program of the beverage manufacturer Red Bull . Together with the other Red Bull funding candidates Michail Aljoschin and Robert Wickens , he was given a cockpit in the newly created FIA Formula 2 championship , in which all drivers were looked after by the same team. In the third race in Brno he scored his first victory. He finished the season with 50 points in fourth place in the drivers' championship. He was thus defeated internally by Red Bull Wickens (64 points) and Aljoschin (59 points). In addition, Bortolotti made two guest starts for Carlin in the Formula 3 Euro Series in 2009 . He crossed the finish line once in third place. Bortolotti also took part in Formula 1 test drives for the Scuderia Toro Rosso in Jerez , which is part of Red Bull .

In 2010 Bortolotti switched to the Addax team in the newly founded GP3 series . He scored five points in 16 races. A second place in the last race was his best result. As the best driver in his racing team, he finished eleventh overall. He was also a member of Ferrari's sponsorship program that year. In 2011 Bortolotti returned to the FIA ​​Formula 2 Championship. He won straight away and at the Nürburgring and in Barcelona he even managed to win both races, take both pole positions and set the fastest lap each time. Bortolotti always finished among the top six drivers. At his home race in Monza , he secured the Formula 2 championship title early with a win. In total, he achieved 7 wins and 14 podiums from 16 races this year. With 316 to 193 points at the end of the season he was well ahead of second-placed Christopher Zanella . As a prize for winning the Formula 2 title, he was given the opportunity to take part in Formula 1 test drives for Williams on the Yas Marina Circuit .

Despite winning the Formula 2 championship, Bortolotti did not find a permanent race commitment in 2012. For Audi , he first took part in DTM test drives . Later in the year he took part in four races of the ADAC GT Masters for Schubert Motorsport in part and thus debuted in GT Trek. Together with his team-mate Abdulaziz Al Faisal , he achieved third place. In 2013 Bortolotti moved to the Eurocup Mégane Trophy for the Oregon team . In the 14 races Bortolotti started 13 times from pole position and 13 times he crossed the finish line in the top 4. He won seven races and won the championship with 275 to 237 points against Mike Verschuur .

In 2014, Bortolotti was active in both GT and formula racing. He drove for Team Ghinzani in the debut season of Formula Acceleration 1 . He achieved the first pole position and the first win in the series. He was on the podium seven times in eight races and won three races. Before the last race weekend he left the championship lying in second place overall and finally finished second behind Nigel Melker with 135 to 183 points . In GT racing , Bortolotti took part in several races in the Italian GT championship and the European Lamborghini Super Trofeo as a member of the Lamborghini promotional squad . In the Italian GT Championship he was 17th in the GT3 classification for Imperiale Racing with two wins. In the Lamborghini Super Trofeo, he won three races for Bonaldi Motorsport and came fourth in the Pro-Am classification. He also won the world final of the Lamborghini Super Trofeo.

In 2015 Bortolotti became a works driver at Lamborghini and started for the Grasser Racing Team in a Lamborghini Huracán GT3 in the Blancpain Endurance Series . He formed a driver trio with Giovanni Venturini and Adrian Zaugg . The three drivers achieved two sixth places as the best results and were twelfth in the Pro classification. In 2015 , Bortolotti also drove two races in the Blancpain Sprint Series for Grasser Racing in a Lamborghini Huracán . He and his teammate Patrick Kujala achieved two podium finishes. For Grasser Racing, Bortolotti also made two guest starts in the ADAC GT Masters together with Zaugg. The two crossed the finish line in first place, but as they were guest starters, they were not counted as winners. Bortolotti also competed for Imperiale Racing in the Italian GT Championship. He won the GT3 classification three times and finished in fourth place.

Personal

Bortolotti's parents run an ice cream parlor in Vienna , which is why he spent a lot of time in Austria . He grew up in Austria and completed his school career there.
