Shane Patrick Horgan (born July 18, 1978 in Bellewstown , County Meath ) is an Irish rugby union player who plays on the outer three quarters and inner three quarters . He is active for the Leinster region and the Irish national team .

Horgan made his debut for Ireland against Scotland in 2000 , where he also tried . He was part of the squad at the 2003 World Cup as well as at the 2004 Six Nations , where he helped win the Triple Crown . In 2005 he was accepted into the ranks of the British and Irish Lions , where he was used in all four friendly matches. At the Six Nations 2006 he was elected to the team of the tournament because of his excellent performance and was able to celebrate winning the Triple Crown again. Especially the profitable attempt against England brought him positive headlines. In the run-up to the 2007 World Cup , he seriously injured his knee, but got fit in time to play in three Irish games. He won the Heineken Cup with Leinster in 2009 .

Horgan played Gaelic football before beginning his rugby career .
