The Auk is a quarterly ornithological journal and the official organ of the American Ornithologists' Union (AOU). It was launched under this name in 1884 after there had been eight issues of a journal since 1883 called the Bulletin of the Nutall Ornithological Club , the successor of which was The Auk . Joel Asaph Allen , who was its editor until 1912, made a significant contribution to the foundation . The Auk publishes scientific articles on all sub-areas of ornithology, somewhat focused on nearctic and neotropical species.

The quarterly journal has been published without interruption since 1884. The eponymous cover picture of the magazine, which has remained unchanged for a long time, is the giant aalk that died out around the middle of the 19th century . The magazine has been published by the University of California Press since 2008 .
