The GP3 series is an automobile racing series for formula racing cars that was held from 2010 to 2018 together with the FIA Formula 2 championship . Like the FIA Formula 2 Championship, the GP3 series was also organized by Bruno Michel. In 2019 it was replaced by the FIA Formula 3 Championship .

Sporting regulations

The GP3 series was held as part of the supporting program of the FIA Formula 2 championship and was therefore largely part of the supporting program of Formula 1 . A total of ten teams competed in this championship, each fielding three cars.

technology

The GP3 series was a unit series. As in the FIA Formula 2 Championship, chassis from Dallara and engines from AER (Advanced Engine Research Ltd.) were used. The second generation engine (from 2013) was a 400 hp (294 kW) six-cylinder engine with 3.4 liters of displacement and a top speed of 8,000 rpm. A six-speed gearbox from Hewland with electromagnetic control from Magneti-Marelli and paddle-shift controls on the steering wheel was used as the transmission. Pirelli supplied the tires. The safety standard of the GP3 series corresponded to the Formula 1 safety standard of 2006. The budget was around 600,000 euros per vehicle per year.
