Daniil Wjatscheslawowitsch Kwjat ( Russian Даниил Вячеславович Квят , English transcription Daniil Kvyat ; born April 26, 1994 in Ufa , Bashkortostan ) is a Russian racing driver . He won the GP3 series in 2013 . He has been competing in Formula 1 since 2014 .
Career
Beginnings in motorsport (until 2012)
Like most automobile racing drivers, Kvyat began his career in karting , in which he was active until 2009. Kwjat came third in the FIA-KF3 European Championship (2008 and 2009) and runner-up in the FIA-KF3 Asia-Pacific Championship (2008) and the WSK-KF3 International Series (2009).
In 2010, Kwjat switched to formula racing and became a member of Red Bull's support program . He competed for EuroInternational in the European Formula BMW . With a second place as the best result, he finished the season in tenth championship rank . He also made six guest starts in the Pacific Formula BMW for EuroInternational. He crossed the finish line first in two races. He also made his debut for Koiranen Bros. Motorsport in the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup , in which he made two guest starts. He then took part in the winter series of the British Formula Renault for Koiranen Bros. Motorsport and finished this championship in fourth place.
In 2011, Kwjat initially competed for Victory Motor Racing in the Toyota Racing Series , the highest monoposto series in New Zealand, to four of five events. He decided a race for himself and finished the season in fifth place overall. He then returned to Europe to Koiranen Bros. Motorsport. He competed for the team in both the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup and the Northern European Formula Renault . With two wins he finished third in the overall classification in the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup, and in the northern European Formula Renault he was second with seven wins. In both series, he was one position behind his teammate Carlos Sainz junior . In addition, Kwjat again took part in the winter series of the British Formula Renault 2011 and improved to third place. In 2012, Kwjat stayed with Koiranen Motorsport. In the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup, he won seven races and was the driver with the most victories. In the overall standings, however, he lost to Stoffel Vandoorne with 234 to 244 points and came in second. In the alpine Formula Renault it was enough for Kwjat to win the title in 2012. With seven wins and 217 points, he prevailed against Norman Nato , who had scored 214 points.
GP3 series (2013)
In 2013 Kwjat switched to MW Arden in the GP3 series . After a third place was his best result in the first five race weekends, he won the main race in the last three events. He scored his first victory in Spa-Francorchamps . An event later in Monza , he repeated this result. With a victory in the following main race of the season finale on the Yas Marina Circuit , Kwjat secured the title win in the GP3 series early. With 168 to 138 points he prevailed against Facu Regalía . Kwjat had scored more points in the season than his teammates Sainz jr. and Robert Vişoiu together. In addition, Kwjat completed 21 guest starts for Carlin in the European Formula 3 championship in 2013 . He crossed the finish line once in first place and three times in second place. However, he was not rated in any race because he was a guest starter. Kwjat also took part in Formula 1 test drives for Scuderia Toro Rosso in 2013 .
Formula 1 (since 2014)
In 2014 , Kwjat received a Formula 1 cockpit at Scuderia Toro Rosso and chose # 26 as his permanent Formula 1 start number. In his first race, the Australian Grand Prix , he scored points for the first time in ninth place. This made him the youngest Formula 1 World Championship driver to score a point. At his home race in Russia , he achieved his best starting position with fifth place. In the race he lost some positions and was 14th internally, he was defeated by Jean-Éric Vergne with 8 to 22 points. He finished his debut season in 15th place overall.
For the 2015 Formula 1 World Championship , Kwjat moved to Red Bull Racing as Sebastian Vettel's successor . At the first race in Australia he already had a technical defect on the lap on the grid and therefore did not start the race. In the next race, the Malaysian Grand Prix , he scored the first points for Red Bull with a ninth place. He finished fourth at the Monaco Grand Prix . In Hungary he achieved his first podium finish with second place. He improved to seventh overall. Internally, he prevailed against Daniel Ricciardo with 95 to 92 points .
Kwjat was also under contract with Red Bull for the 2016 Formula 1 World Championship . In the first race he did not start because of technical problems. In China , he achieved a podium finish with third place. At the following Russian Grand Prix , Kwjat drove into Vettel's vehicle twice on the first lap, whereupon he was eliminated after a collision with the track barrier. Kwjat was given a 10-second stop-and-go penalty and three penalty points by the race stewards and finished the race in 15th place. Although he had not attracted negative attention because of his driving style, he was criticized by many experts after the race, in some cases massively. Red Bull motorsport consultant Helmut Marko described his behavior as "unacceptable". Red Bull then decided to swap the cockpits of Kwjat and Max Verstappen with immediate effect , so that Kwjat returned to Scuderia Toro Rosso for the Spanish Grand Prix . A ninth place in Singapore was his best result here. He finished the season in 14th place overall with 25 points.
Kwjat stayed with Toro Rosso in 2017 . While his team-mate Sainz had a total of nine points in the first 14 races, Kwjat came in ninth in Australia and Spain only two places in the points. Kwjat was then replaced by Pierre Gasly for two races before returning to the racing cockpit for the US Grand Prix , this time as a replacement for Sainz, who in turn had switched to Renault . After the race, which he finished in tenth place, he was replaced by Brendon Hartley for the remaining three races of the season . At the end of the season, Kwjat finished 19th overall with 5 points.
Kwjat was hired by Ferrari as a development driver for the 2018 Formula 1 World Championship and in this role was mainly used in the simulator.
For the Formula 1 World Championship 2019 , Kwjat returned to Toro Rosso as a regular driver. He replaced Pierre Gasly, who moved to Red Bull. At the German Grand Prix , he achieved a podium finish in third place. At the end of the season he finished 13th overall with 37 points.
In 2020 he will start again for the team from Faenza , which will now compete under the name Scuderia AlphaTauri and no longer as Scuderia Toro Rosso . After the seventh race, he is currently in 16th place with two points in the drivers' standings.
