Jean Lanher

Jean Lanher (born October 31, 1924 in Montmédy ; † January 4, 2018 ) was a French Romance scholar and dialectologist.

life and work

Lanher completed his habilitation at the Sorbonne with Raymond Arveiller with a contribution à l'étude d'une scripta diplomatique en Lorraine. Actes en langue vulgaire antérieurs à 1271, conservés dans le département des Vosges (2 vols., Paris 1976) and became professor at the University of Nancy . He taught French language and literature from the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. Together with Alain Litaize and Jean Richard he compiled the Atlas linguistique et ethnographique de la Lorraine romane (4 vols., 1979–1988). He was co-editor of numerous colloquia volumes on Lorraine regional and local history.

Lanher was an associate member of the Académie de Stanislas since 1978 and a regular member since 1987.
