The 2017 Canadian Grand Prix (officially the Formula 1 Grand Prix du Canada 2017 ) took place on June 11 at the Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve in Montreal and was the seventh race of the 2017 Formula 1 World Championship .
report
backgrounds
After the Monaco Grand Prix , Sebastian Vettel led the drivers' standings with 25 points ahead of Lewis Hamilton and 54 points ahead of Valtteri Bottas . In the constructors' championship, Ferrari was ahead of Mercedes with 17 points and Red Bull Racing with 99 points .
At the Canadian Grand Prix, Pirelli provided the drivers with the tire compounds P Zero Soft (yellow), P Zero Supersoft (red), P Zero Ultrasoft (purple), as well as Cinturato Intermediates (green) and Cinturato Full Wets (blue) for wet conditions .
Compared to the previous year, there were several safety-relevant changes to the route. Many safety fences at the edge of the track were replaced by wall blocks with attached safety fences, this applied to turn one to turn three , turn seven , turn eight and turn ten . The safety fence was renewed at turn 15 . In the run-off zone of curve eight , the gravel bed was replaced by an asphalt surface, and the grass pavers in curve 14 and curve 15 were also replaced by asphalt. Instead of stacks of tires were in the curves one to three , eight , ten and 13 now TecPro barriers take. In addition, five SAFER barriers were installed in the area of the curve .
There were two DRS zones that remained unchanged compared to the previous year. The first zone began after the pits hairpin , exactly 55 meters before the next full throttle curve. The second zone was on the start-finish straight and began 70 meters after the last corner. Just like at the season opener in Australia , there was only one measuring point for both DRS zones , so that in the event of a successful overtaking maneuver in the first zone, the driver ahead could use the DRS again in the second zone.
In this race, the Mercedes customer teams Force India and Williams F1 used the engine update for the first time, which the works team had been using since the Spanish Grand Prix .
After he skipped the race in Monaco because of the Indianapolis 500 , Fernando Alonso returned to the Formula 1 World Championship in this race.
Jolyon Palmer (seven), Vettel (six), Sergio Pérez (five), Nico Hülkenberg , Esteban Ocon (four each), Romain Grosjean , Daniil Kwjat , Kevin Magnussen , Carlos Sainz jr. , Stoffel Vandoorne (three each), Hamilton, Felipe Massa , Kimi Räikkönen , Pascal Wehrlein (two each) and Max Verstappen (one) went into the race weekend with penalty points.
With Hamilton (five times), Raikkonen, Alonso, Vettel and Daniel Ricciardo (once each), five former winners competed in this Grand Prix.
Race commissioners were José Abed (MEX), Garry Connelly (AUS), Paul Cooke (CAN) and Derek Daly (IRL).
free training
In the first free practice, Hamilton set the fastest time with a lap time of 1: 13.809 minutes ahead of Vettel and Bottas.
In the second free practice, Raikkonen was fastest in 1: 12.935 minutes ahead of Hamilton and Vettel. The training had to be interrupted after Verstappen parked his vehicle with a defect on the edge of the track.
In the third free practice session, Vettel set the fastest time ahead of Raikkonen and Hamilton with a lap time of 1: 12.572 minutes.
Qualifying
The qualifying consisted of three parts with a net running time of 45 minutes. In the first qualifying segment (Q1), the drivers had 18 minutes to qualify for the race. All drivers who achieved a time in the first section that was a maximum of 107 percent of the fastest lap time qualified for the Grand Prix. The best 15 drivers reached the next part. Bottas was the fastest. Wehrlein hit the road barrier shortly before the end of the section, so there was no improvement for the other drivers. The Sauber drivers, Magnussen, Lance Stroll and Vandoorne were eliminated.
The second section (Q2) lasted 15 minutes. The ten fastest pilots qualified for the third part of qualifying. Hamilton was fastest. Palmer, Grosjean, the Toro Rosso pilots and Alonso were eliminated.
The final section (Q3) lasted twelve minutes, during which the first ten starting positions were awarded. Hamilton set the fastest time with a lap time of 1: 11.459 minutes ahead of Vettel and Bottas. It was Hamilton's 65th pole position in the Formula 1 World Championship, and he drew level with Ayrton Senna .
Since the gearbox of Wehrlein's vehicle was changed after qualifying, he was moved five starting positions back. Since his rear wing was also replaced with a component that was not identical - Sauber only had one rear wing in the latest configuration for each driver - he had to start from the pit lane.
run
At the start of the introductory lap, Kwjat initially stopped and had to let the entire starting field pass. He followed the field with some delay. Since he had not returned to his position until the first safety car line, which was just before the last chicane, he should have started from the pit lane. Since he had already overtaken all the pilots who were supposed to start behind him at this point, with the exception of Alonso, he nevertheless took the grid and started from eleventh place on the grid. The stewards thereupon pronounced a drive-through penalty against Kwjat, and he received two penalty points. Since the stewards later realized that a drive-through penalty was the wrong punishment because the regulations provided for a 10-second stop-and-go penalty for this offense , he was later given an additional ten-second time penalty. After the race, his team argued that it was very dangerous to overtake so many drivers up to a certain point on the track, as all the drivers used the entire width of the track to zigzag and warm up the tires. In addition, at the time when Kwjat realized that he could no longer overtake Alonso, it was no longer possible to drive into the pit lane.
At the start, Hamilton stayed in front, Bottas and Verstappen started much better than Vettel and Raikkonen. Bottas overtook Vettel on the inside before the first corner, both of Verstappen on the outside. In the process, Verstappen's right rear wheel came into contact with Vettel's front wing, which was damaged. In midfield, when approaching turn four , Sainz came into contact with Grosjean, who was driving next to him. Sainz overlooked Grosjean and spun after the vehicles collided. The car skidded over the grass without much braking and hit the Williams von Massa, who had just turned into turn four , and then hit the barrier. Both cars were so badly damaged that the drivers were eliminated. Alonso, who drove directly behind Massa, could only avoid both vehicles by leaving the track and lost several positions. At the end of the lap, Grosjean pitted to repair his car. The race management sent the safety car out onto the track to rescue the two vehicles . Sainz received a starting place penalty of three places for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix and two penalty points for causing this collision .
Hamilton led ahead of Verstappen, Bottas, Vettel, Ricciardo, Räikkönen, Pérez, Ocon, Hülkenberg and Kwjat. At the end of the third lap, the race was released again and Vettel lost part of his damaged front wing. At the exit of turn eight , Raikkonen came onto the grass verge with the left rear tire. He managed to intercept the vehicle, but lost one position to Pérez. In the fifth lap, Vettel switched to Supersoft and had the vehicle nose changed, so he fell back to last place. Meanwhile, Hamilton is clearly at the top.
In the eleventh lap, Verstappen rolled out with a defective battery. Since he parked his vehicle on the edge of the track, the race management announced a virtual safety car phase , which Hülkenberg was the only driver in the top ten to use to change tires. The race was released again on lap 14. A few seconds before the clearance, Magnussen accelerated and overtook Vandoorne despite the overtaking ban. Although he let it pass again shortly afterwards, the race stewards gave Magnussen a five-second time penalty and he received two penalty points.
On lap 17, Raikkonen, who was in fifth place, switched to Supersoft , one lap later Ricciardo switched to Soft and another lap later Pérez, who had previously driven directly behind Ricciardo, switched to Supersoft . The order of the three pilots remained unchanged, they then passed Alonso one after the other, who had not yet been to the pits. At this point, Vettel first overtook Stroll and Magnussen, so he was eighth.
On lap 22 Bottas switched to Soft and fell back to third place behind Ocon. He narrowed the gap to Ocon, but failed to overtake him. Hülkenberg had reduced the gap to Stroll and attacked him, but Stroll drove to the pit stop at the end of the lap and switched to Supersoft . Vettel caught up with Alonso and overtook him on lap 26.
On lap 31, Hamilton and Ocon also switched to Supersoft , Hamilton remained in the lead, Ocon fell back to sixth. This meant that Hamilton was ahead of Bottas, Ricciardo, Pérez, Räikkönen, Ocon, Vettel, Alonso, Hülkenberg and Kwjat. Ricciardo drove slower than the drivers behind him, so that Pérez, Räikkönen and Ocon caught up on the following laps. The Vettel driving behind also shortened his gap to the group.
On lap 41 Raikkonen came to the pits for the second tire change, he switched to Ultrasoft again . A lap later, Alonso came into the pits and switched to Supersoft , falling back to eleventh place. Raikkonen drove the fastest lap of the race to date, Stroll passed Vandoorne and Alonso one after the other. In lap 48, Vettel also switched to Ultrasoft again , losing only one place to Raikkonen.
Kvyat reported problems with the engine by radio. At the end of the 53rd lap, he drove to the pits, where the tires were changed after having served the ten-second time penalty. The rear right wheel nut could no longer be screwed tight, so that Kvjat lost two laps. He drove another lap and then gave up the race in the pits. Vettel drove the fastest race lap up until then several times, together with Räikkönen he caught up to Ricciardo, Pérez and Ocon by up to 1.5 seconds. On lap 60 Raikkonen suffered braking problems, so that he had to let Vettel pass and as a result had to slow down for up to six seconds per lap. However, his lap times then stabilized, so that he stayed ahead of Hulkenberg.
The Force India pilots put pressure on Ricciardo but failed to get past. On the 64th lap, Hamilton set the fastest lap of the race. Vettel had reduced the gap to Ricciardo, Pérez and Ocon and was now also within striking distance. Ocon attacked Pérez on lap 65, but he defended himself. Vettel took the opportunity and passed Ocon, one lap later he also passed Pérez. Due to these fights for positions, however, Ricciardo had separated by around four seconds and Vettel was no longer able to catch up with him before the finish. On lap 68, Alonso, in tenth place, parked his vehicle with an engine fault.
Hamilton won the race ahead of Bottas and Ricciardo. It was Hamilton's 56th victory in the Formula 1 World Championship, including the sixth in Canada. Since he also achieved pole position, led every lap and achieved the fastest race lap, he managed a Grand Slam . It was the first one-two for the Mercedes team since the 2016 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix , with Ricciardo finishing third for the third time in a row. For the first time since the 2016 Brazilian Grand Prix , no Ferrari driver achieved a podium finish. The remaining points were placed by Vettel, Pérez, Ocon, Räikkönen, Hülkenberg, Stroll and Grosjean. For Stroll it was the first points in the Formula 1 World Championship.
The first three positions in the drivers' championship remained unchanged. In the constructors' championship, Mercedes took first place from Ferrari, Red Bull remained third.
