Reports
background
One week after the Grand Prix of the USA East , RAM Racing was represented again at the eighth World Championship round of the year. Jacques Villeneuve , the brother of Gilles Villeneuve , who died in a fatal accident last year and after whom the racetrack in his home country had now been named, competed as a guest starter for the team, but missed just like in his first two attempts for Arrows at the 1981 Canadian Grand Prix and the subsequent Las Vegas Grand Prix qualification. It was the last time he was entered for a Grand Prix.
training
René Arnoux secured pole position for the second time within a week. He was followed on the starting grid by Alain Prost , Nelson Piquet , Patrick Tambay , Riccardo Patrese and Eddie Cheever .
run
Arnoux converted his starting position into a lead ahead of Patrese, Prost and Piquet. Only from the 35th to the 38th lap was another driver in the lead, Patrese, after Arnoux had briefly dropped to fourth place after a pit stop. Because the other drivers also made pit stops, Arnoux came back to the top and won confidently. A gearbox failure on lap 57 prevented Patrese from finishing second. Instead, Cheever finished ahead of Tambay. Keke Rosberg , Alain Prost and John Watson were the other point winners of the day.
