The 1983 Dutch Grand Prix took place in Zandvoort on August 28th and was the twelfth race of the 1983 Formula 1 World Championship .
Reports
background
This weekend, McLaren competed with a turbo engine for the first time , making it the ninth of the 16 teams taking part in the World Championship to have such a drive, after Renault , Ferrari , Toleman , Alfa Romeo , Brabham , ATS , Lotus and Spirit . The V6 unit developed by Porsche with the support of TAG was installed in the MP4 / 1E by Niki Lauda .
training
Nelson Piquet qualified for pole position for the first and only time this season. He was followed by Patrick Tambay in front of Elio de Angelis and Alain Prost, who was leading in the drivers' world championship at the time . Nigel Mansell and Riccardo Patrese formed the third row ahead of Derek Warwick and Andrea de Cesaris .
Marc Surer achieved 14th place on the grid as the best driver without a turbo engine. Despite the turbo engine, Niki Lauda only qualified for 19th position, four places behind his team mate John Watson , who continued to compete with the conventional Ford-Cosworth engine.
run
Eddie Cheever had a very good start from eleventh place on the grid, which put him in second place behind Piquet and in front of Prost, Patrese and de Cesaris. Tambay, on the other hand, dropped from second to 21st place.
After five laps, de Cesaris retired due to engine damage. In the same lap, Cheever was overtaken by Prost. Four laps later, Patrese also passed the American. Meanwhile, René Arnoux , who started from tenth place, was on his way to the top. In the 22nd lap he took third place from Patrese.
Shortly after the now mandatory pit stops, Prost collided with the leading Piquet on lap 42 due to an unsuccessful overtaking attempt in Tarzanbocht . While he was eliminated immediately, Prost was initially able to continue with a damaged front wing, but had to give up shortly afterwards. Arnoux took the lead from Patrese, Tambay and Watson.
A turbocharger damage to Patreses car in the 70th lap enabled a Ferrari double victory, which the team took first place in the constructors' world championship. Watson came in third. The remaining points winners of the day were Derek Warwick, Mauro Baldi and Michele Alboreto . For Warwick and for Team Toleman, these were the first ever World Championship points in Formula 1.
