The only time in the history of the automobile world championship was the season opener at the Dutch Grand Prix. From the next season, the Monaco Grand Prix was the first race of the season again. After the points regulation of the driver and constructors' classification had differed in the previous year, this was adjusted. From 1962 onwards, the designers also received nine points for a victory, but only the result of the best-placed driver of a designer counted.

Jack Brabham , who had driven for Cooper since the beginning of his career and won the World Championship with this team in 1959 and 1960, left the team and founded his own racing team, Brabham , and competed for it as a driver. He registered a private Lotus 24 for the race, and only later in the season did he use the first car he had designed, the Brabham BT3 . A new designer made his debut in the automobile world championship, Lola Cars . The Yeoman Credit Racing Team was taken over by the Bowmaker Racing Team and drove the new Lola Mk4 for the entire season . With John Surtees and Roy Salvadori , the team took over the drivers from the previous season. Lola used the new Climax V8 engines in her car.

Ferrari started the new season with the slightly revised Ferrari 156 , with which they had won both world championships in the 1961 automobile world championship. Phil Hill extended his contract and Ricardo Rodríguez became the new regular driver. Ferrari also signed Giancarlo Baghetti . When Lotus was Jim Clark with Trevor Taylor a new teammates, for both drivers two cars each were reported. Taylor used the old Lotus 24 with the new Climax V8 unit. Clark, on the other hand, used the new Lotus 25 in training , which revolutionized the automobile world championship because it was the first to have a monocoque . This aluminum monocoque made the car lighter, more stable in the curves and also safer and was also installed in all other vehicles in the following years. In addition, Clark became world champion for the first time in the following season with the Lotus 25. At Cooper , Tony Maggs became Bruce McLaren's new teammate . While Maggs drove the old Cooper T55 , the McLaren-driven Cooper T60 made its debut . Due to the new Climax engine, the car was longer than its predecessor, otherwise it looked similar to the Cooper T55. Porsche extended the contracts of its two drivers, Jo Bonnier and Dan Gurney . The Porsche 804 made its debut and was used throughout the season. This car was the last to be produced by Porsche for formula racing, as the team withdrew after the season. The Porsche 804 had a new engine and was visually very different from its predecessor. Overall, the vehicle had become narrower and wider and the rear was significantly lower than its predecessor, the Porsche 718 . As with Lotus and Cooper, only one driver received the new car from BRM . Graham Hill drove the first race with the BRM P57 . Under the time pressure and the threat of the team boss to withdraw from the automobile world championship, the new car was again unable to win, the P57 was developed. The car was similar to its predecessor, but was designed with a new, own BRM unit and had vertical tailpipes in the rear of the car, which were replaced by conventional horizontal exhausts over the course of the season. Graham Hill's new team-mate was Richie Ginther , who moved from Ferrari to BRM.

In addition to the works team, some teams with private vehicles were also registered. The UDT Laystall Racing Team reported a Lotus 24 for Innes Ireland and a Lotus 18/21 for Masten Gregory . Both drivers drove for the team the entire season. The Ecurie Maarsbergen registered three different vehicles for Carel Godin de Beaufort , Wolfgang Seidel and Ben Pon , who contested his only race in the automobile world championship. The Ecurie Galloise also reported a Cooper T53 for Jackie Lewis .

With Brabham and Bonnier, two former winners took part in the race, Ferrari had previously been successful three times with the designers, Cooper and BRM once each. Between the US Grand Prix in 1961 and the Dutch Grand Prix in 1962, various Grand Prix not counted as part of the World Cup took place. Baghetti won the Coppa Italia in a Porsche , Clark won the Rand Grand Prix , Natal Grand Prix , the Grand Prix of South Africa , the Lombank Trophy and the Aintree 200 five races for Lotus. Graham Hill has won two BRM victories, the Glover Trophy and the BRDC International Trophy . These victories for Graham Hill and Clark were also a sign of the course of the season, as the World Championship was mainly decided between these two drivers. Willy Mairesse also won the Grand Prix de Bruxelles and the Gran Premio di Napoli for Ferrari . Taylor and Lotus won the Cape Grand Prix , McLaren and Cooper won the Lavant Cup and Maurice Trintignant won the Pau Grand Prix . Stirling Moss , who was always in the top three of the drivers' championship for the previous seven years, was seriously injured in an accident at the Glover Trophy and ended his career after a coma and a long recovery period.

training

The first practice session of the season was a close duel between Surtees on Lola and Graham Hill on BRM, which Surtees won with a tenth of a second ahead of Graham Hill's time. This was the first pole position for Surtees. In his first race, the designer Lola achieved the only pole position in the history of this racing car manufacturer. Both drivers were over half a second faster than the third placed, Clark. Brabham qualified fourth ahead of his former teammates McLaren and Ireland fifth. Six different teams were represented on the first six starting positions. Ginther in the second BRM qualified in seventh, the best Porsche driver was Gurney in eighth.

Ferrari, which dominated the 1961 automobile world championship and had achieved pole position six times in a row, only qualified for positions nine, eleven and 12. The Ferrari 156 was over two seconds slower than the competition in the front row, which was already clear that the car had lost its dominance and competitiveness compared to the previous season.

run

Graham Hill's first win

Clark overtook Surtees and Graham Hill at the start and for the first time in his career took the lead in a Grand Prix that was part of the automobile world championship. He was followed in second place by Graham Hill, followed by Gurney. Surtees, who started the race from pole position, already lost several positions on the first lap and had a serious accident on lap eight when his Lola's suspension broke and he spun off the track into a forest adjacent to the track. Another accident occurred on lap four when Rodríguez spun and Brabham hit his car. Brabham retired, Rodríguez continued the race, but retired later in the race on another spin. Both Graham Hill and Surtees survived their accidents unharmed. Due to the accidents in the leading group, Phil Hill improved to fourth. In the back field, Pon spun off the track and Salvadori gave up the race for safety reasons after his teammate's accident.

Clark built up a lead over the competition in the first few laps, which he lost again when his Lotus had gearbox problems. Graham Hill caught up by lap eleven and took the lead on the following lap. Clark dropped further positions and finished the race ten laps behind the winner in ninth place. After McLaren and Gurney also retired with gearbox damage, Graham Hill led Phil Hill and Taylor. While Graham Hill controlled the race and experienced a lead over his two opponents, they fought a duel for second place, which Taylor won. He almost lost this place when he met Ginther's Ferrari while lapping Ginther. But he was able to continue the race after the collision while Ginther was eliminated. Another accident occurred on lap 61 when Ireland lost control of its Lotus and spun off the track. The car overturned several times and landed in a chain link fence, Ireland survived the accident but was slightly injured.

Graham Hill crossed the finish line 27 seconds ahead of the runner-up, securing his first win of the season. BRM won the second Grand Prix after Bonnier had previously won the Dutch Grand Prix in 1959 . In the drivers 'and constructors' championships, both Graham Hill and BRM took the lead for the first time, but neither of them won the Dutch Grand Prix again in the following years. Taylor reached the first points of his career. It was the only place on the podium. Phil Hill completed the podium in third place ahead of his team-mate Baghetti. Maggs got the first points of his career for fifth, as did Beaufort in sixth. Bonnier, Lewis and Clark crossed the finish line outside of the points. McLaren drove the fastest lap of the race, for him it was the third and final fastest lap in the automobile world championship.
