Reports
background
The Belgian Grand Prix was to be held in Zolder for the first time. During a route inspection in advance, members of the GPDA criticized the asphalt. The organizer then decided to renew it by the race weekend.
In addition to the field of drivers that had already competed in the Spanish Grand Prix three weeks earlier , Chris Amon joined the driver of a revised version of the racing car from the Italian manufacturer Tecno .
training
During the Friday training session, the new and not yet fully hardened asphalt broke open several times. Corresponding repair work had to be carried out on Saturday night. The GPDA threatened to boycott the Grand Prix if the problems were not completely resolved. During the training sessions on Saturday it finally turned out that the route was easy to drive.
Ronnie Peterson qualified for pole position for the third time this season in the Lotus 72 . He shared the front row with Denis Hulme in the McLaren M23 . Behind the only participating Ferrari driver Jacky Ickx started ahead of François Cevert in a Tyrrell , Jean-Pierre Beltoise in the BRM P160 and Jackie Stewart in the second Tyrrell.
run
Peterson was initially able to convert his pole into a lead, but was already overtaken by Cevert on the second lap, who then managed to break away from the rest of the field. Ickx, Hulme and Carlos Reutemann followed .
A little later, Hulme slipped briefly from the track and lost touch with the top. He'd run into oil leaking from Ickx's engine. A little later, the Belgian had to give up because of this damage. Reutemann was then in third place, which he was able to maintain until he retired on lap 15 due to an engine failure.
Fittipaldi and Stewart caught up to the top. On lap 18, Fittipaldi first overtook his team-mate Peterson. When Cevert spun shortly afterwards, the Brazilian was able to take the lead. Five laps later, however, he was ousted from this position by Stewart.
In the final phase of the race, Fittipaldi increasingly had to struggle with fuel pressure problems. He then had to let Cevert pass, which ensured a Tyrrell double victory. Behind Fittipaldi, Andrea de Adamich , Niki Lauda and Chris Amon crossed the finish line and each secured their first World Championship points of the season.
