description
Appearance and leaves
In Dipterocarpus TYPES There are mostly evergreen and deciduous, tall aspiring trees . Strong buttress roots are often present at the base of the trunk . The grayish-brown to orange-colored bark has raised lenticels , is cracked and peeling. The resin is aromatic, oily and white. The heartwood is brown to red, brown to yellow, brown to green, the sapwood is clearly different in color from the heartwood.
The leaves are arranged alternately on the branches. The leathery leaf blades are simple. The leaf margin is fully or wavy. The pinnately arranged side veins are straight and the third-order leaf veins are conspicuously arranged in an almost ladder-like manner. The large stipules envelop the terminal bud and leave a ring-like leaf scar when they fall off.
Inflorescences and flowers
In hardly branched, racemose inflorescences are usually three to nine flowers together. The relatively large, sweet-smelling, hermaphrodite flowers are radial symmetry and five-fold with a double flower envelope . The five unequal sepals are fused together at their base like a jar or cup. The five petals are downy (sometimes with star hair) and often white with a reddish central stripe. The yellow anthers are elongated. The fluffy hairy, Upper permanent ovary are ovate. The thread-like stylus ends in a slightly widened scar .
Fruits and seeds
The solitary, nut-like fruits have five wings, two long and three short. The two large ones develop into erect wings. The seeds are fused with the base of the pericarp and contain an embryo with two unequal, large, thick cotyledons ( cotyledons ) and an inconspicuous radicle .
distribution
The genus Dipterocarpus is widespread in Southeast Asia. It occurs in Sri Lanka , India , Pakistan , Bangladesh , Myanmar , Cambodia , Thailand , Laos , China , Vietnam , Malaysia , western Indonesia and the Philippines . Dipterocarpus species are forest-forming in many areas of Southeast Asia, this type of vegetation is called Dipterocarpus forest; it is a dry, deciduous forest.
