Reports
background
In the week before the fifth round of the World Championship, test drives took place on the Circuit Paul Ricard in southern France. Elio de Angelis had a serious accident in the course of this. His recovery took a comparatively long time due to the poorly equipped security forces. Driver colleagues had to help. In addition, there was no rescue helicopter on site, but had to be requested first. De Angelis later succumbed to his injuries in a hospital in Marseille , whereupon discussions arose about urgently needed improvements to safety standards during test drives.
At Brabham , de Angelis was initially not replaced. The team competed with only one car for Riccardo Patrese . Otherwise there were no further changes in the field of participants compared to the Monaco Grand Prix two weeks earlier.
training
In addition to pole-setter Nelson Piquet , Gerhard Berger , who competed for the up-and-coming Benetton team, qualified for second starting position. The second row was the defending champion Alain Prost together with Ayrton Senna, who was leading in the World Cup at the time . Williams driver Nigel Mansell followed ahead of Teo Fabi in the second Benetton B186 .
run
While Piquet was able to convert his pole position into a lead, Senna and Prost caught up with the badly started Berger before the La Source hairpin . This collided with Prost, whereupon the following pilots had to swerve abruptly. Except for Patrick Tambay , who damaged the suspension of his car, all drivers were able to continue the race without major damage. Nigel Mansell followed behind Piquet and Senna in front of Stefan Johansson and Johnny Dumfries .
On the third lap Mansell passed Senna into second place, but spun two laps later, so that Senna and Johansson relegated him to fourth place.
Senna took the lead on lap 17 due to a damage to Piquet's engine. In the course of the pit stops to change tires that followed shortly thereafter, Johansson led the race for a short time and, from the 24th lap, Mansell led the race. Ayrton Senna followed in second place in front of the two Ferraris owned by Stefan Johansson and Michele Alboreto . Jacques Laffite crossed the finish line in fifth ahead of Alain Prost, who had fought his way back to sixth within 32 laps after finishing the first lap in 23rd as a result of the collision with Berger.
