The 1986 Brazilian Grand Prix took place in Rio de Janeiro on March 23rd and was the first race of the 1986 Formula 1 World Championship .

Reports

background

Apart from Ferrari , no team competed with the driver combination from the previous year . Renault and Alfa Romeo had ended their engagements as factory teams and in 1986 only appeared as engine suppliers.

New team mate of reigning world champion Alain Prost at McLaren was after the retirement of Niki Lauda , the former Williams -Pilot Keke Rosberg , whose place alongside Nigel Mansell of Nelson Piquet was taken. Brabham then completely repositioned itself with Riccardo Patrese and Elio de Angelis .

Ayrton Senna prevented the originally intended Derek Warwick from becoming his new teammate in Team Lotus . Instead, the British debutant Johnny Dumfries was hired .

The Toleman team was completely taken over by its former main sponsor Benetton and from then on entered the new team under his name. Teo Fabi was taken over and Gerhard Berger hired as the second driver. BMW was signed as an engine supplier and thus equipped a third team alongside Brabham and Arrows .

While Minardi , Haas and Osella expanded their commitment to two cars each, Zakspeed started the season with just one vehicle. Most of the teams used new or significantly improved racing cars. The unusually flat Brabham BT55 , which was designed by Gordon Murray , caught the eye .

A few days before the first race of the season, team boss Frank Williams was seriously injured in a car accident in southern France and has been paraplegic ever since.

training

Lotus driver Ayrton Senna qualified for pole position in front of the two Williams FW11s driven by Nelson Piquet and Nigel Mansell and the two Ligier drivers René Arnoux and Jacques Laffite .

run

After getting off to a better start, Mansell tried to overtake Senna. This prevented this and Mansell slipped into the track barrier. His team-mate Piquet showed a little more patience and overtook Senna on the third lap. Michele Alboreto , who had overtaken René Arnoux shortly before, followed in third place . Alboreto's team-mate Stefan Johansson finished fifth after Keke Rosberg retired due to an engine failure.

Prost fought his way to the top by the 20th lap. When he made a pit stop on lap 27, Piquet, who like Senna had already stopped, took the lead. Three laps later, Prost had to give up due to electrical damage.

In front of their home crowd, the two Brazilians Piquet and Senna finished first and second in front of Jacques Laffite, René Arnoux, Martin Brundle and Gerhard Berger. For Brundle it was the first point in his career.
