Reports
background
With no changes in the field of participants compared to the season opener in Phoenix , Formula 1 entered the second World Cup round of the year in Brazil.
training
Ayrton Senna secured pole position in front of the two Williams drivers Riccardo Patrese and Nigel Mansell and his team-mate Gerhard Berger . The Ferrari duo Jean Alesi and Alain Prost shared the third row in front of Nelson Piquet and Maurício Gugelmin , who, like Senna, contested their home race.
run
While Senna took the lead, Berger was unable to defend himself against Mansell, Patrese and Alesi due to a fire in the rear of his car. The fire went out quickly, however, so that from then on he could contest the race unaffected.
After failing to overtake Piquet for several laps, Prost hoped to have an advantage after an early pit stop with fresh tires. Due to the stop, he initially fell back to eleventh place. Piquet moved up to third place on lap 29. However, Berger and Prost were able to overtake him before the 45th lap.
On the 50th lap Mansell had to visit his pit crew again due to a puncture. With a gap of around half a minute on the leader Senna, he returned to the track as still runner-up. His race to catch up was ended on lap 59 due to a gearbox failure. Since Senna also noticed signs of an impending transmission damage to his car, he decided to be on the safe side not to change gears during the last seven laps and to finish the race in sixth gear. This enabled his subsequent competitors Patrese and Berger to catch up. However, since they too had to struggle with technical problems, there was no opportunity to overtake.
It started raining shortly before the end of the race. Senna, Patrese, Berger, Prost, Piquet and Alesi reached the finish line within 24 seconds. How exhausting the last laps in the rain were, in particular, without the possibility of a gear change for Senna, was shown by the fact that team members had to help him get out of his car.
For Ayrton Senna this was the first of two victories in front of a home crowd.
