The Benetton B190 was a Formula 1 racing car with which the Benetton team took part in the World Championship in 1990 and early 1991 . The car was designed by John Barnard .
Technology and development
The 1990 season goal for Benetton was to win a Grand Prix. The goal was achieved with Nelson Piquet's victories at the Japanese Grand Prix and the Australian Grand Prix . The strength of the Benetton B190 was its reliability. The B190 used the 1989 Cosworth eight-cylinder engine of the type HB , which differed from the older DFR, among other things, by a narrower cylinder bank angle of 75 degrees. But it didn't have the power like the McLaren Honda engine and the Ferrari engine . The chassis of the Benetton was considered one of the best among the competition and often allowed the pilots to be at the forefront. The B190 weighed 505 kg and had a 200 liter tank. The engine weighed 140 kg, had a displacement of 3497 cm³ and developed around 645 hp (474 kW) at 12,700 revolutions per minute. The six-speed gearbox was produced by Benetton. After minor modifications to the aerodynamics and safety for the 1991 season , the car was called the Benetton B190B .
production
A total of nine chassis of the B190 / B190B were built in Enstone (Oxfordshire / GBR).
Sponsors
According to the company slogan "United Colors of Benetton" of the team owner Benetton, who also advertised as the main sponsor on the engine cover, the vehicle was painted in primary colors in the 1990 season : with a green front, yellow engine cover, red and light blue side pods and light blue rear. As a further sponsor, the Japanese Autopolis racetrack advertised on the side pods, on the rear wing and on the nose of the vehicle. The logo of Riello , an Italian manufacturer of boilers and thermal baths, could also be seen on the side pods , and that of the Japanese electronics company Sanyo on the side of the vehicle front . In addition, the team suppliers Ford , Mobil 1 and Goodyear advertised on the vehicle.
The appearance of the Benetton B190B changed for use at the beginning of the 1991 season: The vehicle was mainly painted yellow, the side pods dark blue and only the tip of the vehicle green. The main sponsor of the team was the cigarette brand Camel , whose logo was now placed on the yellow engine cover and on the side panels of the front wing. Autopolis, on the other hand, continued to advertise extensively on the vehicle, with Sanyo's stickers moving from the side of the vehicle to the front wing. Riello, however, no longer sponsored Benetton in 1991.
driver
The three-time world champion Nelson Piquet was signed as the first driver , alongside Alessandro Nannini . Roberto Moreno was hired because of a helicopter crash before the Japanese GP, in which Nannini almost lost an arm .
