Enstone is a village in England and one of the largest civil parishes in Oxfordshire . Enstone has 1,103 inhabitants (2001) and is located about 20 kilometers northwest of the city of Oxford . Enstone is divided into Church Enstone and Neat Enstone , which are separated from each other by the River Glyme . The villages of Lidstone, Fulwell, Cleveley, Gagingwell, Radford, Broadstonehill and Chalford are also part of Enstone.

history

Enstone was originally listed as Henestan in the Domesday Book of 1086 and as Enestan or Ennestan in records at Winchcombe Abbey from 1185. While there are different views as to the origin of the word Enstone, it is believed that it is of Anglo-Saxon origin. The popular belief is that the word Enna's stone means - "a stone made by a man named Enna", although there is also a belief that the words "ent and Stan" - literally mean giant stone. These stones are on the corner of Charlbury Fulwell Street, where you can see the three standing stones among the trees. The tallest stone is almost three meters high. There are other stones in Lidstone, Broadstonehill, and Rollright.

economy

The "Whiteways Technical Center" was built in Enstone in 1992 and is now used by the Renault F1 Team . It deals with the construction of the Formula 1 cars, but also with the coordination of the racing team. About 700 people are employed there.

traffic

The A44 (Oxford - Stratford) is one of the main thoroughfares and runs right through Neat Enstone.

The Enstone Airfield ( ICAO : EGTN) is a small airfield north-east of the town. It has a 1100 m long paved runway in the direction of 08/26. During the Second World War, the Royal Air Force operated it as Royal Air Force Station Enstone , or RAF Enstone for short .
