The Lotus 102B was a Formula 1 racing car from the British racing team Lotus , which was used in the 1991 Formula 1 season .
Technical specifications
Due to a lack of financial means - the cigarette brand Camel , which belongs to the RJ Reynolds Group , had terminated the sponsorship agreement with Lotus at the end of 1990 - the racing team was unable to develop a new vehicle for the 1991 Formula 1 season. Instead, the team resorted to the Lotus 102 from the previous year, which was named 102B after slight modifications. The racing car was designed by the engineering team Enrique Scalabroni and Frank Coppuck.
Changes mainly affected the rear end, which could be made more filigree. However, there were problems with the very deep cockpit opening, which led to increased air turbulence in the area of the driver's helmet. The monocoque was made of carbon fiber reinforced plastic.
The Lotus 102B was powered by a 127 kg Judd V8 naturally aspirated engine with a displacement of 3496 cm³. At a speed of around 11,500 rpm, it developed an output of around 455 kW. The engine electronics and ignition system were from Gibson Technology (Zytek). The manual transmission from Lamborghini had six forward and one reverse gears. The wheels were individually suspended from double wishbones. The braking system came from Hitco and the brake calipers from Brembo . The shock absorbers, on the other hand, were supplied by Bilstein .
sponsor
Lotus did not have a major main sponsor for 1991. Instead, the vehicle was mostly painted in white and British Racing Green . The advertising media included the Japanese construction machinery manufacturer Komatsu , the model maker Tamiya and the clothing company Tommy Hilfiger .
Season course
The Judd engine turned out to be a mistake for Lotus due to its lack of performance and reliability. The drivers failed the pre-qualification nine times. Mika Häkkinen and Julian Bailey won the three world championship points at the San Marino Grand Prix . After that no further countable results could be achieved by the pilots. At the end of the season, Lotus finished ninth in the constructors' championship.
