The Lotus 107B was a Formula 1 racing car from the British racing team Lotus , which was used in the 1993 Formula 1 season .

Technical specifications

The Lotus 107B is a further development of the Lotus 107. The transmission, a weak point of the old vehicle, has been strengthened. The specialty of the Lotus 107B, however, was its active wheel suspension , which was electronically controlled to regulate the ground clearance of the chassis. However, the system turned out to be inadequate and was one of the causes of the serious training accident of Alessandro Zanardi at the Belgian Grand Prix at the exit of the Eau Rouge corner . Zanardi had to be replaced by Pedro Lamy for the rest of the season as a result of the injuries he suffered .

The monocoque was made of carbon fiber reinforced plastic . A total of six chassis were built. The Lotus 107B was powered by a 130 kg Ford-Cosworth HB -V8 with a capacity of 3,494 cm³. At a speed of around 12,800 rpm, it developed an output of 493 kW. The engine electronics and ignition system were from Cosworth . The semi-automatic transmission developed by Lotus and Xtrac had six forward and one reverse gears. In addition, the racing car had traction control . The braking system came from AP. The tank held 200 liters.

The team's main sponsors were the British oil company Castrol , which belongs to the BP Group, and the Japanese electronics and mechanical engineering company Hitachi . Other advertising media included the construction machinery manufacturer Komatsu , model maker Tamiya , the adhesive manufacturer Loctite and the pharmaceutical company Shionogi .
