The Lotus 33 was a Formula 1 racing car , built and used from 1964 to 1967 by the British Formula 1 team Lotus .

The Lotus 33 was a further development of the Lotus 25 . The chassis as well as the front and rear suspensions have been revised to accommodate the new, wider Dunlop tires. The Lotus 33 replaced the 25 from the middle of the season and became the defining vehicle in the Formula 1 World Championship in 1965 .

For the first season of the new 3-liter formula, the car was powered by the 2-liter V8 engine from Climax . A BRM V8 engine was also installed in some 33. Jim Clark became the superior world champion in 1965 with six wins this season and Lotus secured the constructors' cup. In 1966, the 33 was already clearly inferior to Brabham's competition . Jim Clark still won the Tasman series , but the privateers could only celebrate a few successes with the 33.

In 1967, after the Monaco Grand Prix , the 33 was replaced by the Lotus 49 .
