Framework of action and production

Moderator Bear Grylls

The plot of each episode is that Bear Grylls is released into the wild in a different region . From then on he has to find his way back to civilization and usually set up camp for the night, find food himself, and withstand inhospitable weather. He presents methods used by the locals and soldiers. During the episode, Grylls tells about the experiences of other people in the respective region.

It takes about a week to record a single episode. Before each shot, the film crew prepares for a week and Grylls flies over the area. Then Grylls undergoes two-day survival training. At the beginning of the episodes, a note is displayed that makes it clear: Even if Grylls presents how one can help oneself, he is accompanied by a camera team that can intervene in an emergency and notify other helpers. Some scenes are also set to demonstrate special dangers or survival methods.

reception

criticism

There has been criticism in the US that the episodes give the impression of a real journey of survival; especially because the shooting team sometimes supports Bear Grylls with his buildings and he also stays in hotels. The fact that Grylls is not traveling alone is made clear by the introductory note and other elements such as B. Addressing the cameraman, obviously.

The following scenes were also set:

  • Grylls himself stayed at the hotel several times instead of in the wilderness as specified in the show. I.a. this applied to the following circumstances:
    • Grylls pretended to be stranded on a desert island similar to Robinson Crusoe, but he was on a Hawaiian island and stayed at a nearby hotel.
    • In the Sierra Nevada, he was allegedly exposed to the wilderness with only a bottle of water and a minimum of equipment, but spent several nights in an accommodation with TV and Internet access.
  • A grizzly bear approaching Gryll's campfire was played by a colleague in a costume. The choreography of this scene was set well in advance as crew members wanted to play a prank on Bear with the action. Nevertheless, the scene was shown as a supposedly real incident without giving the true background. Some of the noises were generated by the crew.
  • A snake allegedly killing and eating Grylls on the show was previously found dead by the roadside by the film crew.
  • A dead badger that Grylls supposedly cooked and eaten was actually a steak wrapped in badger skin .
  • When Grylls pretends to have got stuck with the parachute in a tree, he was previously pulled up the tree by his team in a safety belt system.
  • In one show, he allegedly builds a raft himself from bamboo, hibiscus and other plants. However, the raft was previously built by a team and then dismantled for Grylls.
  • When Grylls allegedly lassoed wild mustangs, they were tame horses that were driven from a nearby ranch to the location.
  • On an active volcano, Grylls hops over lava and evades poisonous gases. This scene was visually enhanced with the help of hot coal and smoke machines.
