The Lotus 101 was a Formula 1 racing car from the British racing team Lotus , which was used in the 1989 Formula 1 season .

Technical specifications

The racing car was a creation of the new chief designer Frank Dernie , whom Lotus had poached from Williams. The contract negotiations were so lengthy that Dernie was only allowed to start working on the vehicle late. Completion was delayed so much that the car could no longer be tested before the start of the season. A special feature of the Lotus 101 was its extremely long wheelbase of 2895 mm, which ensured good weight distribution. In addition, the front of the vehicle was heavily tailored. The aluminum plates with carbon and aramid fiber reinforced resin manufactured monocoque was developed in collaboration with Carbon Industries. Four chassis were built.

The Lotus 101 was powered by a Judd V8 naturally aspirated engine with a capacity of 3496 cc, as had already been used by Williams , March and Ligier in the 1988 Formula 1 season . It developed a maximum of around 600 hp (440 kW) at an engine speed of around 11,200 rpm. The Hewland transmission had six forward gears and one reverse gear; it was switched manually. The tank held 195 liters. The braking system came from Brembo , the shock absorbers from Bilstein . The internal springs and dampers on the front axle were actuated via tie rods, and on the rear axle via push rods.

The main sponsors were the tobacco company with the Camel cigarette brand and the electronics company Epson .

Season course

The low point of an otherwise changeable season was the non-qualification of both vehicles at the Belgian Grand Prix , which was just as unique in the 40-year history of the team as it was in Nelson Piquet's entire driving career. Despite the underpower and poor handling of the Lotus 101, Piquet and team-mate Satoru Nakajima together scored 15 world championship points, which meant sixth in the constructors' championship. In expectation of better results for 1990 , the engine contract with Judd was terminated at the end of the year and one with Lamborghini was concluded instead . In addition, both drivers left the team after the season: Piquet went to Benetton , Nakajima came to Tyrrell .
