The Lotus 102D was a Formula 1 racing car from the British racing team Lotus , which was used in the 1992 Formula 1 season .

Technical specifications

Due to developmental delays on the Lotus 107 , the team management decided to contest the first races of the 1992 Formula 1 season with an almost unchanged Lotus 102B . Last year's eight-cylinder Judd (type EV) engine was not used again. Initially, Lotus had considered converting to Judd's ten-cylinder engine (Judd GV), but then decided at short notice in favor of Cosworth customer engines, the costs of which could be covered with the support of the sponsors Castrol and Hitachi . Lotus received Cosworth HB-V engines that year , which were at the 1991 level of development. With a mass of 130 kg, it developed around 520 kW at a speed of 13,400 rpm. The engine electronics and ignition system were also from Ford. The manual transmission had six forward and one reverse gears. The wheels were individually suspended from double wishbones . The braking system came from Hitco and the brake calipers from Brembo , while the shock absorbers were from Bilstein .

The main sponsor of the team was the Japanese electronics and mechanical engineering company Hitachi . Other Japanese advertising media included the construction machinery manufacturer Komatsu and the model maker Tamiya .

Season course

Although the racing car was intended as a transition vehicle, both Mika Häkkinen and team mate Johnny Herbert scored points with it . Two of the 13 world championship points from the 1992 Formula 1 season were achieved with a Lotus 102D. The last time this guy was used for training at the San Marino Grand Prix . However, Häkkinen could not qualify for the race.
