The Coloni C4B was a Formula 1 racing car belonging to the Italian motorsport team Andrea Moda Formula , which was entered for a Grand Prix in 1992 but did not take part in the race.

The background

The C4B was based on the Coloni C4 racing car used by Coloni in 1991 .

In autumn 1991, the team owner Enzo Coloni sold parts of his racing team, which had been involved in Formula 1 since 1987, to the Italian shoe manufacturer Andrea Sassetti. Among other things, Sassetti took over the equipment of the team as well as the Coloni C4, which in 1991 had not participated in a single race due to repeated non-qualifications or technical defects. With this material he built his own Andrea Moda Formula racing team, which was to take part in the 1992 Formula 1 World Championship instead of Coloni.

It is unclear whether Andrea Moda initially planned to contest the entire 1992 season with the C4B. Individual contemporary sources described the C4B as a mere interim car even before the start of the season, which was about to be replaced by a newer design; Others assume that Sassetti first tried to find a successor after the team was excluded in Kyalami.

The technology

For the 1992 season, the Coloni C4, based on a design from 1989, was revised in the area of drive technology. While the chassis and the suspension were taken over unchanged, the Andrea Moda technicians, under the direction of Paul Burgess, installed a ten-cylinder Judd GV engine in the rear of the car. It was a used engine that had been used by BMS Scuderia Italia in the Dallara 191 in 1991 . Andrea Moda also took over the rear suspension and transmission from Dallara; both were combined with the old Coloni chassis.

Racing use

Andrea Moda Formula registered two Coloni C4Bs for the South African Grand Prix for Enrico Bertaggia and Alex Caffi . It is doubtful whether two vehicles were actually produced, as only one of the technical basis - the Coloni C4 - existed. Images regularly only show a vehicle with the starting number 34.

Alex Caffi drove his C4B around the Kyalami circuit on the Thursday before the South African Grand Prix . The occasion was a few acclimatization rounds, which were necessary so that the pilots could get to know the course, which had not been used for several years, before the start of the pre-qualification. This is where the only photographs of the C4B were taken. Caffi only drove a few laps before the car came to a standstill with a technical defect. It was not prepared for Bertaggia; Bertaggia also did not go on the circuit with his own car.

After completing these acclimatization rounds, Andrea Moda was excluded from participating in the race. The reason for this was disputes about the need for a deposit and the related question of whether Andrea Moda should be seen as a new team and had to use a self-constructed car instead of a third-party vehicle that was already in use. In view of the exclusion, Andrea Moda no longer took part in the pre-qualification for the Grand Prix of South Africa. The C4B was not entered for any other Grand Prix. The team continued its Formula 1 involvement from the Brazilian Grand Prix with the Simtek- designed Andrea Moda S921 .

Location of the vehicle

The C4B was taken over by private collectors in the following years. They rebuilt the car to the C4 specification. Today the car is occasionally shown publicly with a Cosworth engine in the paint scheme of 1991 and is driven at historic motorsport events. It was last published in 2012 in Zandvoort under Jan Lammers .
