Reports
background
Lotus launched the new Type 107 for the first time, which was piloted by Johnny Herbert , while Mika Häkkinen continued to compete in the 102D after transmission problems occurred on his copy of the new car. The new M192 premiered at Minardi .
With regard to the driver line-up, there were no changes compared to the Spanish Grand Prix two weeks earlier.
training
The fifth qualifying of the season also resulted in a pole position for Nigel Mansell , as he was the only driver to complete laps at average speeds of more than 220 km / h this weekend. His team-mate Riccardo Patrese qualified for the second starting position, as he did on the first three race weekends of the current season. The second row was formed by the two McLaren MP4 / 7A from Ayrton Senna and Gerhard Berger in front of the two Benetton B192s from Michael Schumacher and Martin Brundle and the two Ferrari F92A from Jean Alesi and Ivan Capelli .
With Mika Häkkinen and Damon Hill , two future world champions failed to qualify.
run
The first attempt to start failed. As a result, the originally planned race distance was shortened by one lap.
From pole position, Mansell once again achieved a commanding start-to-finish victory, which Patrese added to a double victory for Williams .
Since Alesi, in contrast to the two McLaren drivers, opted for a racing strategy without an interim pit stop, he finished third in the middle of the race. Capelli and Schumacher were both unable to finish the race due to driving errors.
On lap 39, Alesi and Berger collided. Both were eliminated, making Senna third. Martin Brundle crossed the finish line in fourth ahead of Michele Alboreto and Pierluigi Martini .
